Warren MS Tina Spain 7 TH GRADE COURSE SELECTION

Students will be on a 7 period day School hours: 8:30-3:55 Doors 7:45 Tutorials 7:55 Students will choose: 4 core classes (Math, Science, English, History) Athletics or PE 2 electives Students who are not successful in Math or Reading will be placed in an Enrichment class. (This will take the place of an elective) GENERAL INFORMATION

 Students have the option to choose Pre-AP courses for all 4 core subjects.  Pre-AP Science  Pre-AP Texas History  Pre-AP English  Algebra (Student must have taken Pre-Algebra in 7 th Grade)  Pre-AP courses have a grading, late work and redo policy.  Teacher signature of approval is preferred.  Pre-AP English has required summer readings. CORE CLASSES

 A student cannot be in Athletics and PE  A student must choose Athletics or PE  Student must tryout for at least two sports  A physical is required to participate in athletics.  Girls Sports: Volleyball, Basketball, Track & Cross Country  Boys Sports: Football, Basketball, Track & Cross Country  Practices will be before and/or after school depending on sport. ATHLETICS

 Art  Band  Choir  Musical Theatre  Project-Based Technology  Spanish 1B  Technology Exploration  Teen Leadership  Theatre Arts ELECTIVE OPTIONS

ART Students will develop their artistic abilities and creativity. Creative thinking will be encouraged by allowing students self expression. Students will discover how art relates to everyday life and how they may pursue art as a possible career. Students will be expected to purchase supplies for this course.

BAND Their our 4 levels of band (Beginning, Intermediate, Concert, and Symphonic) will be offered depending on the number of students interested. Beginning Band class will be for those students who are new to band. Intermediate Band will be used to continue fundamental concepts learned during the first year of playing. All bands will have concerts. Students should also plan on participating in contests outside of school hours. Students must rent or buy an instrument. Criteria for placement include ability/needs, conduct, and eligibility.

CHOIR There are 3 choirs currently at Warren Middle School (Treble, Select Treble and Tenor/Bass) Students will perform at public performances and be given the opportunity to perform at UIL music events. Choral audition is required for placement in Select Treble class.

MUSICAL THEATRE Musical Theater is a performance-based class that includes all elements of the Theatre and Music curriculum. All students are expected to perform in all of the programs by either dancing or singing or both. The class will do two large public performances each year: a showcase in the fall and a musical in the spring plus other smaller performances during the school year. Attendance is required at all after-school rehearsals and performances.

PROJECT BASED TECHNOLOGY In Project Based Technology students will use a variety of 21 st century online tools and software to design and build challenging long-term projects. These projects will utilize an online learning environment to create podcasts and presentations. This course will provide students with tools and skills that will be invaluable throughout their high school and college careers.

SPANISH 1B Spanish 1B is designed to develop the student’s ability to read, write, and speak Spanish. Conversational expressions and basic grammar will be stressed. This course in addition to Spanish 1A (7 th grade) must be taken to receive High School Credit.

TECH EXPLORATION This course will focus on individual and cooperative learning to enable the student to explore experiences with various computer hardware and software applications related to current career opportunities. Immersed in an active, engaging learning environment, the student will explore astronomy, bioengineering, body systems, dynamic earth, environmental issues, genetics, music and sound and forces.

TEEN LEADERSHIP This course is a character education and leadership development course that teaches students personal responsibility, principal-based decision making, social skills, communication skills, and goal setting.

THEATRE ARTS This course will focus on oral and written communication skills necessary to be successful in interpersonal, group, and public communication, with an emphasis on building self- confidence, organizing materials, and improving listening skills. Creative dramatics and performance techniques will be improved through theater experience.
