Get ready before the bell rings!  Take out homework and a pencil to prepare for the homework quiz!  Check the file folder for your class to pick up graded work  Located by the bookshelf, blue crate.  Look behind the tab for your class period and take home anything with your name on it.

Investigation 1: Extending the Number Line Accentuate the Negative, Chapter 2

Math Fever  Open your textbook to page 8  Rules for Math Fever:  Teams choose a category.  If they get the question correct, they get the points.  If they miss the questions, they lose the points.  Work in pairs  Each pair will turn in one paper with answers to Problem 1.1, A-C on pages 8-10.

Red & Black Chips  What does it mean when they say a business in the black? What about in the red?  Black Chip = +1 dollar (income)  Red Chip = -1 dollar (expense)  Tate owes his sister $6 for helping him cut the lawn. He earns $4 delivering papers. Is Tate “in the red” or “in the black”?  Work in pairs  Each pair will turn in one paper with answers to Problem 1.4, A-F on pages

Extending the Number Line  On the number line above the board, we see positive and negative whole numbers called integers.  Each negative number can be paired with a positive number. These two numbers are called opposites because they are the same distance from zero on the number line.  Are there more numbers on the number line?  Rational numbers are numbers that can be expressed as one integer a divided by another integer b, where b is not zero.  Complete Problem 1.2 A-G on pages with your neighbor.

From Sauna to Snowbank (Using a Number Line)

Number lines  The National Weather Service keeps records of temperature changes. The world record for the fastest rise in outside air temperature occurred in Spearfish, South Dakota, on January 22, The temperature rose from -4 degrees F to 45 degrees F in two minutes!  What was the temperature change?  How could you show this change, n, on a number line?

Your turn!  Turn to page 16 in your textbook. Attempt Problem 1.3, A-E  Sketch number lines to show your work!
