Wanganui Glass School is New Zealand’s Glass School. The Wanganui Glass School, a dedicated Glass Art facility within the Quay School of the Arts at Whanganui UCOL, offers full-time students nationally unique courses including the three year, level 6 Diploma in Glass Design and Production, the four-year Bachelor of Fine Arts Majoring in Glass and one year Graduate Diploma in Fine Arts.

Typically our classes are made up of students who have recently left school as well as people looking to take up a second career. We teach in three primary areas: Hot Glass, Warm Glass & Cold Glass.

Job Prospects for Graduates The Glass Design & Production programme produces lateral and creative thinking graduates who are well versed in design, marketing and managing a small business. These are desirable attributes to today’s employers and equip the graduate well for self-employment as a glass artist, or employed craftsperson working in a professional studio, graduates are equipped to work as designers in other business sectors outside of glass art.

The Chance to Travel There are other options available such as becoming an assistant to other glass studios in New Zealand or overseas. Some graduates have opted to work their way around the world in glass studios. Further Education Wanganui Glass School Design & Production graduates can use their qualification as a solid foundation and stepping stone to future education through the Bachelor of Fine Arts Degree or similar qualification overseas.

What you will learn Wanganui Glass School students are taught by distinguished and professional practicing glass artists who are dedicated to guiding the students in the discovery and development of their specific intellectual, technical, critical and aesthetic abilities. Students work in hot, warm and cold glass techniques including glassblowing, casting, fusing, slumping, sand casting, painted glass, mixed-media sculpture, and engraving. They are encouraged in teamwork, experimentation and conceptual development.

Wanganui’s Glass and Art Scene It’s no secret that Wanganui has a vibrant and talented artistic community. Its galleries and studios feature glass, painting, sculpture, photography, ceramics, textiles and indigenous arts and crafts. Discover studio artists tucked away in many of the heritage buildings. Of particular note is the glass art with Wanganui having 30 practicing glass artists, many of them well known internationally. On the hill in Queen’s Park, sits the Sarjeant Gallery.
