Steps to a Successful Project: Step 1: *Help your child to choose a topic that he/she is interested in and one that can be tested. *The project must follow the steps of the Scientific Method (p. 1 of handout). Demonstrations are not acceptable.

Step 2: *Help your student locate references about the topic of his/her experiment. * The student will read a variety of references and write a summary of his/her findings (two or more paragraphs). *The student will form a hypothesis based on his/her research and observations.

Step 3: *Gather the materials needed to perform the experiment. *Help your child take the necessary safety precautions to insure a safe project.

Step 4: *Supervise your child as he/she performs the experiment a minimum of 3 times and records the results.

Step 5: *Your student will write a report based on his/her findings. (See Instructions for Report on p. 1 of the handout.) *Proofread your student’s work and suggest any necessary changes.

Step 6: *Help your student create his/her visual display. (See Science Fair Requirements on p. 3 of the handout) *Don’t forget to include a chart, graph, photos, or other data on the board.

Step 7: *Review the Science Fair Judging Sheet (on p. 2 of the handout) to be sure that everything has been included. p. 2 of the handout) to be sure that everything has been included.

Step 8: *Have your student practice what he/she will say for the oral presentation and be sure that he/she can answer questions about the project. *Remind your child that the important thing is what has been learned from the project, not if he/she wins a prize or not.
