 Transports oxygen and nutrients  Carries disease-fighting materials produced by the immune system  Contains cell fragments and proteins for blood clotting  Distributes heat throughout the body to help regulate body temperature

 Carry blood away from the heart.  Composed of three layers:  Outer layer of connective tissue  Middle layer of smooth muscle  Inner layer of endothelial tissue

 Microscopic blood vessels  Exchange of important substances and wastes occur  Walls are only one cell thick.

 Carry oxygen-poor blood back to the heart  Contraction of skeletal muscles helps keep the blood moving.  Contain valves to keep blood flowing one way

 A hollow, muscular organ  Pumps blood throughout the body (2 pumps)  oxygenated blood to the body  deoxygenated blood to the lungs

 Divided into four compartments called chambers  Right and left atria  Receive blood returning to the heart.  Right and left ventricles  Pump blood away from the heart.

 A strong muscular wall (septum) separates the left side of the heart from the right side of the heart.  Valves  Separate the atria from the ventricles  Keep blood flowing in one direction.

1. The sinoatrial (A) node sends out signals that cause both atria to contract. - Fills ventricles below with blood 2. The signal travels to the atrioventricular node (B), causing both ventricles to contract.
