PLEASE FIND A SEAT ANYWHERE. WELCOME TO YOUR 7 TH GRADE SOCIAL STUDIES CLASS!

OBJECTIVE AND CONTENT STANDARDS: Objective: Students will be given an introduction in 7 th grade Social Studies and begin to analyze the geographical make-up of the world. Content Standards: 7 – G1.1.1 Explain and use a variety of maps, globes, and web based geography technology to study the world, including global, interregional, regional, and local scales.

FIRST THINGS FIRST… Let’s start with the syllabus: This is what details the expectations of the class. Many of you already received this on Open House night. I made extra copies for each of you though. Please don’t write on them, I’m going to keep using the same ones for every class.

NOW LET’S LEARN ABOUT YOU… How many of you in here are new to Homer this year? How many of you are new here in the past 3 years? How many of you have gone to school here your entire life?

NAME GAME: Here’s the deal: I want to learn your names. I have found the easiest way to do this is play a simple name game. So please listen up and see if we can follow along.

NOW ONTO ME: I grew up in… I am married to… I have two awesome… My hobbies are… Any questions for me?

LET’S MOVE ONTO OUR FIRST ACTIVITY OF THE YEAR: Please have out a pencil. A piece of scrap or good paper (it doesn’t really matter). Here’s what we are going to do: Please write down five things you can learn from the picture shown to you. You have 5 minutes… Please write down one question you have about the picture. You ready?

WELCOME TO GEOGRAPHY:

MY QUESTIONS FOR YOU… Please try your best to answer the following: If the continent of Africa has more people than the United States, why is the United States more lit up? If China has 3 times more people than the United States, then why isn’t it 3 times brighter? Can you find 3 physical landforms on the map? Which continents seem to be the most technologically advanced? How do you know?
