The Spread Of Western Mining By: Charles Rivera Jr., Katelyn Caldwell, Lance Jeffers, and Alexis Mora. (The pink was Katelyn’s idea)

Mining 1884 families moved to the west coast for gold. Over 30 years from1859,a Comstock lode would hold 400 million dollars in gold & silver. 1861, government made Colorado territory from the settlers.

Mining (continued) Home stake mine opened in 1827 in the black hills of Dakota. Black hills was possibly the richest single mine ever uncovered in the world.

Mining Advancements…… Hydraulic pumps pounded mountainsides with water. With the arrival of dynamite in the 1870’s, miners blasted ore and stuff out of hillsides. Huge drills replaced old fashioned pickaxes. Mining had become the realm of big business.

Miners methods A tool that the miners used was, a shallow pan used to scoop up the dirt & water. Miners would gather in small groups or even families to work.

Miner methods (cont.) Placer Mining. °A mining method in which miners would shovel loose dirt into boxes & then run water over it, to separate the other stuff from the gold.
