43rd CGSIC6 Continue modernizing GPS Multi-phase effort to be executed over the next 15+ years Principle objective of modernization is additional coded civil signals Key elements include a new 2 nd signal on the L2 frequency (L2C) and new 3 rd signal on the L5 frequency for use in safety of life applications First satellite (GPS IIR-M) with the L2C signal planned for launch in 2005 First satellite (GPS IIF) with the L5 signal planned for launch by 2006 Vulnerability Mitigation

43rd CGSIC10 Certify safety-critical GPS receivers GPS Receiver Enhancement Aviation - Receivers have always been certified Maritime SOLAS amendments came into force on 1 July 2002 Covers all navigation equipment for ships, including Marine GPS / DGPS receivers U. S. Coast Guard is Maritime Safety Administration under SOLAS and has established an interim approval program USCG Intends to propose federal regulation to establish a permanent approval program
