First Three years of Graduate School: New Graduate Student Fellowships (NGFs) Characterized by: Yearly stipend, tuition and health insurance coverage, possible international travel funding. Some Common Agencies: The Ford Foundation Predoctoral, NSF GRFP, NDSEG, Hertz

Dissertation Funding: Many different types: Dissertation Planning Dissertation Research Dissertation Writing A Mix Characterized by: Funding for either research or stipend or both (check requirements), may include travel/a variety of expenditures in budget

Preparation: One year of writing and editing!!! Letters of reference Lengthy, 20+ page, single-spaced proposal 6 pages of references Approved budget (remember your departmental contact from the first couple slides!) There are many sources of dissertation funding and you may be able to apply for more than one. You should start looking now.

Postdoctoral Fellowships: Very similar to graduate student fellowships, except there are more of them, and thus, they are more subject specific. Start your search now!

Preparation: a minimum of three months curriculum vitae short summary of research interests letters of reference

Throughout your career as a graduate student and a faculty member: Prestigious Scholarships- such as Fulbright, Boren, Pickering, and Rhodes Characterized by: Stipend to live in another country and teach, do research, or even just learn another language.
