Error correction/Assessment That’s all I can think of off the top of my head. I can’t think of one offhand. I would use … That’s interesting! It (all) depends. It might be, I suppose. I’ll help you if you get stuck. That was rather disappointing. You can do better than that. Some of you still need improvement with (adjectives).

In a way, perhaps. That’s more like it. That’s much better. This does not strike me as right. Not really. Try to come up with another word. You can’t use that word here. You’ve almost got it. You’re half way there. Have a guess if you don’t know. Not to worry, it’ll improve. What if I give you a clue? Good try, but not quite right.

Feedback Positive Doing great. I like that. A good guess. You did a great job. Magnificent! Fantastic job! Hooray for you! Wow! Great stuff! Negative Unfortunately not. I’m afraid that’s not quite right. You can’t say that, I’m afraid. You can’t use that word here. Good try, but not quite right. Not quite right. Try again. Not exactly.

 Don't go to class unprepared  Don't be inconsistent  Don't issue threats  Don't raise your voice  Don't give boring classes  Don’t be unfair  Don't have a negative attitude to learning  Don't break the code (Nunan and Lamb 1996, p. 124).

 Make a good first impression.  Come in with enthusiasm and show you are excited to be there.

 "Hi everyone. Just let me put my things down here and we'll get started."  "Morning. Not many people here yet? / Where is everyone?"  "Okay everyone, file in quietly and take a seat please  "Hi. Come in. Take a seat/ Sit anywhere you like "  "Please put your bags on your pegs/ in your desks/ on the back of your chairs/ on the stage/ in a pile by the door/ "  We're going to do pairwork, so you need to sit closer to each other  "Can the last person in close the door?"  "Please stop talking and be quiet" / "(Can everyone please) settle down so we can start."  "Okay, I'm glad you're excited, but let's calm down a little, shall we?"  "I'm still hearing some noise at the back"/ "What's going on back there?"  "We have the same thing every week. What am I waiting for?... For you to be quiet, that's right."  "They'll be plenty of time for speaking once the class has started."

 "How are we all today?"/ "How are you (today)?" / "How are things?"  "Are you (all) feeling better today?“  Good morning, guys!  Hello everybody!  I hope you have all had a nice weekend.  I'm a teacher trainee and my name is…  "My name is Mr/Mrs/Ms.. / I'm your English teacher this year/ this term/ today. "Can you all introduce yourselves to me?"  "Let's introduce ourselves, shall we?"  "This is my name at the top of the board, it's pronounced..."

 Hello again. Mr/ Mrs is still sick/ Yes, (it's) me again!  Hello, everybody. My name is... I am substituting for...  I’ll be substituting for your English teacher today.  "I'm covering for your usual teacher (today/ this week). He/ she has a cold"

 I've come to take...'s place. Or: I'm standing in for...  I’ll be taking you for the rest of the week.  Who can tell me what you did at the last lesson?  Where did you stop at the end Of the last lesson?  Where are you in your text books?  What's your homework?

 I'll call the register and (in) that way begin to know you. I haven't filled in the register. I'll just mark the register. Is everybody present now? Are you all here? Where are the others?  Who isn't here? How many people are absent? Five? That's rather a lot. I wonder what's wrong with them? What's wrong with her? Or: What's up with her? Is anyone going to see her to day? "Who's the class monitor this week?"

 "Who is absent today? / Who isn't here today?"  "So everyone is here except..."  "Let's take the register."/ "Let's check to see who is here."  "Remember to answer 'I'm here'"  "Is everybody here?"/ "Is anyone away?"  "So, X isn't back yet. Does anyone know when she'll be back/ what has happened to her/ if she's dropped out of the class?"  "Not many people here today?"  "Listen while I call your names"

 "Now I'd like you to continue asking and answering questions about your weekend/ your hobbies, but using the structure on the board/ but as a game"  "I'd like to start the lesson by revising what we did last lesson/ seeing how much you remember from last week"  "I'd like to start the lesson with a pop quiz/ a warmer/ some revision"

"The aims of today's lesson are.../ are at the top of the board" "As I explained last week, today is the day for the final test/ presentations" "Today, we're going to do something a bit different/ unusual/ strange. This is to.../ Why we are doing it will become clear later on." /"This may seem a little unusual, but it's all part of the plan!" "Today/ In this lesson/ This week we'll learn how to../ we will study.../ we will practice... "

 Today is the test, remember. So, I want you to come in without speaking and take out just one pencil and one eraser. No books and no pieces of paper. Got it? When you've got your pencil and eraser out of your bag, put your bags at the back of the classroom. Ready? Quietly, come in one at a time.  Any questions before the test starts?  All your hard practice and preparation will now come into play in the finals.

Today's the test, but we'll do something else for 10 or 15 minutes to give other people a chance to get here Best of luck (for the test, exam). Good luck. Congratulations! Well done! Hard lines! Hard luck! Better luck next time.

 Sorry, that was my fault.  Excuse me.  Sorry, I am a little bit late. I was delayed by the traffic.  Sorry I am late. I give my apologies to everyone here.  I’m terribly sorry.

Where have you been? We started ten minutes ago. What have you been doing? Did you miss your bus? Did you oversleep? Don’t let it happen again. What do you say when you are late? What's your excuse? Your alarm-clock didn't go off? Did you oversleep? Try not to be late next time. That's all right. Sit down and we can start. This is the third time you've been late this week

How is X getting on? Is she any better? Has her temperature come down? Why did you miss last Monday lesson? Where have you been for the last few days? How are you feeling today? I think you'd better go to the sick-room. I hope you've recovered from your cold? Have you got a doctor's note/medical certificate? Do you have a good reason for having missed my class?

 Excuse me for a moment/I’ll be back in a moment.  Carry on with the exercise while I’m away.  I’ve got to go next door for a moment.  (Anna), stay behind, please, I’d like a word with you.  I’m afraid I can’t speak any louder.  I seem to be losing my voice.  I’m feeling under the weather.  Do you mind if I sit down?

Now let's begin / start. Let's start our lesson, now, shall we? Let's make a start.. Let's get started. It is time to start now. Is everybody ready to start? Or: Are you all ready for your English lesson? I'm waiting for you to be quiet. We won't start until every one is quiet - Now let's get down to some work

 The main idea I want to get across is that …  Take a look at… (these verb forms)  (The Present Perfect) is the way to go here.  OK, I think we have had enough of (grammar exercises) for today, now I’d like you to…  Many times have you been told that socializing is not done in my class.  Thank you and have a great day!

 OK, lots of you have homework outstanding. Who wants to go first with their dialogue?  You guys had an important assignment. Who wants to take the stage?  Let me ask you a few questions about the stuff that we covered last time.  All right, so last time we were talking about …  And why don’t we actually review some of the stuff that we talked about last time (before we start talking further about…)

Т his is your homework for tonight (today/next time). For your homework would you do exercise 10 on page 23. Prepare as far as (down to/up to) page 175. Finish this off at home.
