Slide: 3 What is an engineer? An Engineer is the professional who uses knowledge of the mathematical and natural sciences, gained by study, experience, and practice, and applies it with judgment to develop ways to utilize, economically, the materials and forces of nature for the benefit of mankind. The Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology (ABET).

Slide: 4 The "practice of professional engineering" means any act of planning, designing, composing, evaluating, advising, reporting, directing or supervising, or managing any of the foregoing, that requires the application of engineering principles and that concerns the safeguarding of life, health, property, economic interests, the public welfare or the environment. The official definition of "the practice of professional engineering" from the Canadian Council of Professional Engineers.

Slide: 5 In this definition, we notice the following: The engineer’s work is based on solid facts and scientific knowledge. The engineer’s attitude towards life and nature is positive in the sense that he/she is a builder. The engineer is concerned with products of applied nature (practical). The engineer’s primary approach is judgment (sensible).

Slide: 12 Engineering vs Management A woman in a hot air balloon realized she was lost. She reduced altitude and spotted a man below. She descended a bit more and shouted, "Excuse me, can you help me? I promised a friend I would meet her an hour ago but I do not know where I am." The man below replied, "You are in a hot air balloon hovering approximately 9 meters above the ground. You are between 40 and 41 degrees north latitude and between 59 and 60 degrees west longitude." "You must be an engineer," said the balloonist. "I am", replied the man. "How did you know?" "Well, answered the balloonist, "Everything you told me is technically correct, but I have no idea what to make of your information, and the fact is I am still lost. Frankly, you have not been much help at all. If anything you have delayed my trip even more."
