ENGLISH POLITENESS CATEGORY SPECIFICITY AND PROBLEMS OF ITS TRANSLATION Dobritsa Daria ПР-09-4м

The diploma paper under consideration deals with the politeness category means of expression in the English culture and the problems of its rendering into Ukrainian language.

The relevance of this issue is justified by:  the rising role of intercultural communication,  the formation of the new intercultural quality requirements,  the need to conduct a profound research in the field of interpersonal verbal communication and ways of choice of the verbal means.

 The subject of the diploma paper is the category of politeness.  The objects are the politeness category means of expression used in the movie discourse and problems of its translation.

The purpose of the work given is to master the main politeness theory concepts, to highlight the main politeness markers functions of the English language and to offer the best solution to the translation problems.

 The politeness category is quite controversial issue, which has no universal definition for all cultures in the world.  However world-known linguists understand it as a national peculiar communicative category, which dominates in the interpersonal relationships.

Another approaches of politeness category studies are:  politeness maxims (P.Grice, G. Lakoff, G. Leech),  politeness as an ethical category (L. Kastler, N. Formanovska, S. Risinzon),  politeness as an evaluation of the person’s status (V. Goldin, V. Karasyk ),  politeness as a conversational type of contract (B. Fraser and W. Noul),  politeness as a face-saving process (E. Hoffman, P. Brown, C. Levinson, R. Skollon).

 I. Hoffman, P. Brown and C. Levinson gave the definition of politeness and published their famous research “Politeness: Some Universals on Language Usage”.  They introduced the concept of positive and negative aspects of politeness

Another concept of politeness category was recommended by J. Leech It deals with absolute and relative politeness. Absolute politeness includes: greetings, compliments, congratulations and gratitude. Relative politeness includes: orders, criticism and accusations.

In the second part of this diploma paper we have analyzed examples in terms of:  the positive and negative politeness classification of R. Brown and S. Levinson,  J. Leech’s classification on absolute and relative politeness,  we have also divided politeness markers according to the functions they perform.
