World History with Mr. Golden __________________________________________________________ The Age of Exploration

Objective: ________________________________________________________ FLWBAT examine historical causes for the Age of Exploration

Agenda: ________________________________________________________ - Review - Primary source analysis - Age of Exploration notes - Guided reading - Closing - We’re done!

Discovery or Exploration? ________________________________________________________ Let’s ask this question: Some people call this the “Age of Discovery.” Why might that be a poor name for this unit? Ah yes! I, Christopher Columbus have discovered the New World!

________________________________________________________ Discovery or Exploration? Ah yes! I, Christopher Columbus have discovered the New World! Excuse me?!? Sorry, what was that Chris?

Other Discoveries? ________________________________________________________ I discovered the secret to making a fortune by making movies. I discovered respect for animals… after 23 months in prison. I discovered that facial tattoos of ice cream cones aren’t exactly “cool.” The Big Idea: “Discovery” is finding something new and unknown. “Exploration” is exposing yourself to new things.

Discovery or Exploration? ________________________________________________________ Let’s ask this question: Some people call this the “Age of Discovery.” Why might that be a poor name for this unit? Ah yes! I, Christopher Columbus have discovered the New World! You can’t really discover a place where people are already living. o That’s why we call this the Age of Exploration o This is about being exposed to new cultures, new ideas, foods, technology, art, or… CULTURAL DIFFUSION!

Discovery or Exploration? ________________________________________________________ Examine the picture with your partner and answer the questions below it. Be ready to share your thoughts!

So, why explore? ________________________________________________________ There are a great number of reasons why people seek out new frontiers to explore. Today we’ll look at a few that were especially important in the 15 th century.

Staple it in! ________________________________________________________ Ka-chunk!

God: ________________________________________________________ o The Crusades pushed Christians to feel it was their duty to spread their religion and convert people to Christianity

Gold: ________________________________________________________ o Huge demand for new spices in Europe (introduced during the Crusades) o Europeans try to find new trade routes because they want new sources of wealth

Glory: ________________________________________________________ o Powerful nations are competing to be the “FIRST” to explore the world and set up new colonies o NEW COLONIES = NEW WEALTH! This is history that we’re making friends, and there’s no easy way in the book!

Root Cause: ________________________________________________________ But what was the event that really started it all? Examine the reading with your partner and answer the questions listed in your notebooks!

We’re done! ________________________________________________________ Thank you for all your hard work today! Make sure to put your notebooks in the crate and your folders in folders, please!
