Always Outnumbered Always Outgunned

Movie 1.Socrates Apartment seems a nicer than in the book where it is described as being a run down building with a concrete floor. Socrates talks about how the building he lives in was abandoned by the person Socrates had been paying the rent to.

Movie 1.Unlike in the book Socrates is neatly dresses while applying for the job at bounty Supermarket In the book Socrates felt that he was being denied the job because of his age and because of his appearance.

Slide 3 continued In the 2 nd chapter of the book Socrates says that he has only 80 cents to his name prior to getting the job at the Bounty Supermarket. Because the movie doesn’t really go into detail about Socrates financial status there wasn’t really any reason to make him appear as though he was very poor.

Title In the book there are numerous flashbacks to Socrates Past. The flashbacks were a way of showing how Socrates has overcome the worst of situations. The book goes into detail about how the reason Socrates went to LA was to get away from the police. He ran because he knew that in Indiana the cops would know him. If they knew him they’d try to bring him in every now and then. And if anyone tried to put him in a cell again he would try his best to kill them. Socrates Fortlow was running for his life. ( Page 111 lines 3-7 )

Movie Events in the movie happen out of order Because certain events that were important in the book were not in the movie it would not have made sense for the events in the movie to be in the same order as the events in the book. Another reason events in the movie happen in a different order from the events in the book because certain parts of the book tend to happen in the form of flashbacks which might not have made a lot of sense if they had been included in the movie.

Movie The rooster in the beginning of the book is called Dexter instead of Billy. There is no significance to this difference. The only reason that this was changed was probably to make the movie different from the book as much as possible without changing the important events.

Movie In the movie Philip instead of Darryl killed the kid. The main reason this was important was because the fact that Darryl had killed someone helped Socrates to relate to him. Because the movie didn’t go into as much detail about why Socrates and Darryl did what they did. Because there was no mention about Socrates when he was a lot younger in the movie it would not

Movie In the book Petris left town almost immediately after being told to leave. In the move Petis left then returned then left for good after being run out of his house by Socrates. “Just before sever he saw Petis fleet shadow go toward the back of the courts” page 36 line 1 Throughout the book Socrates is constantly trying to redeem himself for his crimes. If Petis hadn’t left Socrates probably wouldn’t have killed him. This event was a lot more important in the movie because the movie goes further into detail about Socrates Violent past and about other crimes that are never mentioned in the movie. The book mentions all of the people Socrates killed while he was in jail, and how he was never tried because none of them were white. This scene was important because it is one of the few examples of how Socrates would handle a situation where his friends feel that violence is the only answer.

Movie In the movie Socrates goes to the Bounty supermarket every few days to see if there is any new info on his application. In the book Socrates is described as being very persistent, checking in at the Bounty Supermarket every day.

Movie Socrates doesn’t have a job by the time Right finds out he has Cancer Socrates having a job is a very important part of the book. Socrates having a job throughout the entire book shows how determined he is to achieve as much as he can. In the book even when Socrates is sick he fins a way to work so wont have to worry about the possibility that if he doesn’t show up his job will no longer be there.

Movie In the movie Socrates buys Right’s 100 morphine tablets with Right’s savings. In the book Socrates buys Right’s 100 morphine tablets with the reward money he got for turning in the firebug. Because the Firebug was not mentioned in the movie it would have been impossible for Socrates to buy the tablets with his own money because at that time in the movie Socrates had just gotten his job so he didn’t have any money saved up

Movie In the movie Socrates is never shown working. Socrates having a job and working no matter what is a very important part of the book. In the book Socrates is willing to work even when sick so he wont have to worry about the possibility of getting fired. Because Socrates doesn’t get a job at the Bounty supermarket until the end of the movie, it wasn’t as important to show Socrates working in the movie as it was in the book.

Movie In the movie Socrates is never put on trial for assault. Socrates being put on trial for assault was a very important part of the book, it showed how determined Socrates was to help anyone or anything that needs help. The fact that Socrates was willing to get put on trial to protect the life of a dog The black dog was not mentioned in the movie. The Black dog was a key part of the book that leads into the sequel “Walking the dog”. While the dog was shown in the movie it never became anything of importance. The dog should have been included in the movie because it was a key part of the book. In the book Socrates helping the dog was similar to him helping Darryl.

Movie One very important part of the book that was different in the movie was the amount of time Socrates had been out of jail. Because Socrates had only been out of jail for for 8- 9 months, unlike in the book where he had been out of jail for 8-9 years, certain parts of the movie had to be changed to reflect how he would have changed in that period of time.

The always outnumbered always outgunned trilogy 1. Always outnumbered always outgunned 2. Walking the dog 3. Rogue Socrates discovers a previously unknown capacity for nonviolent persuasion -- toting a billboard listing the crimes of a rogue cop, he becomes an embodiment of the conscience of the Los Angeles poor (and sets off a riot)
