Alumni Association earns national honors Scholarship America and Dollars for Scholars have named the Sunnyside School District Alumni Association the H. Stuart and Marlys C. Johnson New Chapter of the Year for 2011.

Summer commencement ceremonies Eighteen students earned their high school diplomas at the conclusion of summer school, bringing the total number of graduates in the district to 873 for The goal for the Class of 2012 is 1,000 graduates.

SUSD presentation at national seminar Mary Veres, Misti Nowak and Monique Soria presented a session July 12 at the National School Public Relations Association annual seminar in San Antonio. The session was on “Reinventing SUSD’s image: From Dropout Factory to Tech-Savvy District.”

New Teacher Orientation 2011 New Teacher Orientation took place July 27 – August 2. Almost 140 faculty members participated, including 75 who are new this school year. Activities took place at Chaparral Middle School. Dr. Debra Bergman and the Professional Development Department coordinated the orientation.

Thank you, Coach DeBerry The Sunnyside community is grateful for Bobby DeBerry’s years of service and dedication, not only to the wrestlers but to all students and families. He had a spectacular career, unmatched in the history of the district. Coach DeBerry plans to spend time with his family and have the opportunity to watch his two sons, Kory and Kyle, wrestle for the Arizona State Sun Devils. We wish him and his family much happiness and success as they begin a new chapter in their lives. Coach DeBerry understands the meaning of “Once a Blue Devil, Always a Blue Devil.”

Opening of School Celebration Aug. 3 The 2011 Opening of School Celebration took place on Wednesday, Aug. 3 at the Desert Diamond Entertainment Center, I-19 and Pima Mine Road. Speakers included Governing Board Clerk Magdalena Barajas and Board Member Eva Carrillo Dong, Superintendent Dr. Manuel L. Isquierdo, Tohono O’odham Chairman Ned Norris, Jr., Superior Court Judge Paul Tang, Daniel Hernandez, Jr., Javier Baca, Sunnyside High teacher Kate Street and student Jacqueline Felix, and Sierra Middle School student Abraham Gomez.
