Applying to the PR Major There’s a process. PR professors (tenured/tenure-track) are the evaluators. #RedbirdPR

Applying to the PR Major Deadline is March 1, Data collected & used: Major: Public Relations Sequence: N/A Admit (Y/N/M) Name: Last, FirstUID Earned Hours 1 st /2 nd SoC Major or Minor GPA Tier* Essay Grade* Total Evaluation Points* Comments GPA TierEssay Grade T1 ( ) = 4 T2 ( ) = 3 T3 ( ) = 2 T4 ( ) = 1 T5 ( ) = 0 A = 4 B = 3 C = 2 D = 1 F = 0 #RedbirdPR

Applying to the PR Major Essay Content Assignment (per website): “Write an essay, not to exceed two double- spaced pages, describing your career goals and how this program will help you achieve them. Check grammar, sentence structure, and punctuation. Remember that this essay represents you to the Faculty Selection Committee.” General expectations for all essays: We want to see from applicants: 1.Some reasonable familiarity with the PR field, not a biography about how a student came upon the major and how it fits her/him personally, and 2.Some reasonable vision of the applicant in a PR career (i.e., classes, internships, PRSSA or relevant extracurricular outlets, and professional goals). 3.Very special considerations about an applicant’s academic performance may be explained briefly and linked to the assignment. #RedbirdPR

Applying to the PR Major Essay Evaluation A (4) = Exemplary and nearly professional in quality. Focused, well-written, thoughtful and well-organized argument in response to the assignment. The essay fulfills all of the assignment’s requirements, especially length. The writer demonstrates the highest degree of intellectual engagement by competently using concepts, terms, and examples about the major, especially concerning career goals. Argumentative claims are well presented, supported, and defended, using evidence and sound reasoning. The paper adheres to the expectations for the assignment, and the writer demonstrated maturity (i.e., style and tone) consistent with the expectations for college courses. The paper demonstrates competence in language use and manuscript preparation, and it is free or nearly free of errors in organization, grammar, spelling, formatting and others. B (3) = Good but needs refinement. Discussion of concepts and terms related to the assignment is okay but needs more application through explanations, examples, or other devices to demonstrate understanding about the major, especially concerning career goals. The essay fulfills nearly all of the assignment’s requirements, especially length. Intellectual engagement with the assignment’s topic is sufficient and may include additional points of interest related to the major and the student’s performance. Argumentative claims are adequately defended with evidence and sound reasoning. The writing suffers from some problems in grammar, spelling, mechanics, formatting, organization, etc., and the style or tone of the writing is ineffective in places. C (2) = Acceptable but needs more work. The essay fulfills many of the assignment’s requirements, but analysis is only at a surface level with limited discussion of the major and career matters. The writing suffers from frequent problems in basic matters of reasoning, grammar, spelling, mechanics, formatting, length of text, organization, etc., and the style and tone of the writing is ineffective and/or inappropriate in many places in the text. D (1) = Inadequate and problematic. Discussion lacks depth, having no or nearly no application of matters about the major and career- oriented information. Argumentative claims are made but not well defended or defended at all. The essay fulfills few of the assignment’s requirements and may be too long or very short. Analysis presents little or no thoughtful reflection. Ideas are over-simplified and limited. The writing suffers from significant, numerous problems in multiple areas, including content, reasoning, formatting, organization, grammar, style, and tone. F (0) = Inferior and unacceptable. The writer’s work does not fulfill the assignment on any of the grounds for other letter grades. NOTE: Excessive problems of any kind in the writing of the essays can, on their own, be sufficient cause for lower scores than what the content by itself may suggest. #RedbirdPR

Applying to the PR Major The process is competitive. The number of applicants admitted depends on the number of majors graduating. PR faculty do not review essay drafts. PR faculty may give general advice essay. See senior PR students for counsel. Follow directions on SoC website. Attend a SoC advising information session. Application deadline is March 1, Questions? Contact SoC Advisement Office. #RedbirdPR
