GCSE Core Chemistry Exam tip; You MUST be able to link the products of burning fossil fuels with acid rain (SO 2 ), global warming (CO 2 ) & global dimming (particulates). You should also know about some developments to overcome problems with fuels Keywords: Greenhouse gas, global Warming, global dimming, acid rain Prior Learning: Know what is produced when fuels combust completely & incompletely

GCSE Core Chemistry Exam tip; You MUST be able to link the products of burning fossil fuels with acid rain (SO 2 ), global warming (CO 2 ) & global dimming (particulates). You should also know about some developments to overcome problems with fuels Learning Objectives: Identify and explain That burning fuels has a negative environmental impact. How we can reduce the pollution from burning fuels. I will be successful in this lesson if I can: State what causes global warming, global dimming and acid rain (Lvl C). List some ways of reducing pollutants released when we burn fuels (Lvl C). Explain how acid rain is produced, and how it can be reduced (Lvl A). Discuss the relationship between global dimming and global warming (Lvl A). Explain methods of reducing pollutants from fuels (Lvl A).

GCSE Core Chemistry Exam tip; You MUST be able to link the products of burning fossil fuels with acid rain (SO 2 ), global warming (CO 2 ) & global dimming (particulates). You should also know about some developments to overcome problems with fuels 1.SO 2 causes acid rain CO 2 causes global warming & Particles cause global dimming 2. Sulfur can be removed from fuels before they are burnt eg in vehicles 3. SO 2 can be removed from the waste gases after combustion eg in power stations

GCSE Core Chemistry Exam tip; You MUST be able to link the products of burning fossil fuels with acid rain (SO 2 ), global warming (CO 2 ) & global dimming (particulates). You should also know about some developments to overcome problems with fuels DEMONSTRATION Write a word & balanced symbol equation for the combustion of Sulfur. sulfur dioxide oxygensulfur S O2O2 SO 2 How does this relate to burning fuels? Sulfur is an impurity in fossil fuels so as the fuel is burned, the creation of SO 2 can occur which can lead to acid rain

GCSE Core Chemistry Exam tip; You MUST be able to link the products of burning fossil fuels with acid rain (SO 2 ), global warming (CO 2 ) & global dimming (particulates). You should also know about some developments to overcome problems with fuels Can you link these pictures? Scientists believe that that droughts, floods & the melting polar caps are all effects of global warming. Weathered statues, buildings & dying forests are the effects of acid rain

GCSE Core Chemistry Exam tip; You MUST be able to link the products of burning fossil fuels with acid rain (SO 2 ), global warming (CO 2 ) & global dimming (particulates). You should also know about some developments to overcome problems with fuels SQUARE PYRAMIDS On each triangular side add information about each of the key issues; Global warming, Global dimming, Acid rain & fuel from plants On the square base; Fuel from rubbish

GCSE Core Chemistry Exam tip; You MUST be able to link the products of burning fossil fuels with acid rain (SO 2 ), global warming (CO 2 ) & global dimming (particulates). You should also know about some developments to overcome problems with fuels Now swap your pyramids & answer these next questions. You will have to tell your swap partner what they were missing (making things difficult for you) &what they were missing (making things difficult for you) & what was really helpfulwhat was really helpful

GCSE Core Chemistry Exam tip; You MUST be able to link the products of burning fossil fuels with acid rain (SO 2 ), global warming (CO 2 ) & global dimming (particulates). You should also know about some developments to overcome problems with fuels SUMMARY QUESTIONS What type of gas is carbon dioxide? How does it affect the earth? What does this effect cause? What human problems can particulates cause? What do particulates do to the earth? How? What does sulfur dioxide dissolve in to form acid rain? How does sulfur get released into the atmosphere? How can you reduce the amount of sulfur dioxide that is released? Greenhouse Gas It reduces the amount of heat lost from earth Global warming Health concerns Causes global dimming By reflecting sunlight away from the earth Water Burning fossil fuels Remove sulfur compounds from fuels at the refinery, remove SO 2 from waste gases after burning

GCSE Core Chemistry Exam tip; You MUST be able to link the products of burning fossil fuels with acid rain (SO 2 ), global warming (CO 2 ) & global dimming (particulates). You should also know about some developments to overcome problems with fuels EXAM REVIEW 6 Cattle give out methane 6 (a) Explain how the methane given out by cattle is affecting the earth’s climate. (3 marks) ???What would marks be given for??? climate. (3 marks) ???What would marks be given for??? Because methane is a greenhouse gas it goes up and stays in the atmosphere so when heat from the sun goes through and cycles around the earth as heat is leaving it gets trapped by the gas effectively changing the climate. Methane is a greenhouse gas, so it stays out of the earth and contributes in reradiating the suns rays back into earth which then contributes to raising the earths temperature. When methane is released, some of it travels around into the atmosphere. The suns rays then hit the earth, but instead of bouncing back, they become trapped in the atmosphere, because of the methane and other gases. The trapped gases cause the climate to rise. -That methane is a greenhouse gas -That greenhouse gas change weather patterns or causes global warming -That greenhouse gases absorbs energy (or infrared light or heat or radiation) that is radiated back from the earth -That greenhouse gases re-radiates (or reflects) some of this energy that is radiated back from earth

GCSE Core Chemistry Exam tip; You MUST be able to link the products of burning fossil fuels with acid rain (SO 2 ), global warming (CO 2 ) & global dimming (particulates). You should also know about some developments to overcome problems with fuels Plants can provide sugars to -make oils that can be used as biodiesel OR -make ethanol (fermenting sugar using yeast, this can then be added to petrol to make gasohol producing less pollution & reducing the amount of oil needed) Fossil fuels are running out. What can be done?

GCSE Core Chemistry Exam tip; You MUST be able to link the products of burning fossil fuels with acid rain (SO 2 ), global warming (CO 2 ) & global dimming (particulates). You should also know about some developments to overcome problems with fuels So what makes a good fuel? AFFORDABLE EASY TO TRANSPORT EASY TO STORE IGNITES EASILY PRODUCES LITTLE WASTE EASY TO MAKE

GCSE Core Chemistry Exam tip; You MUST be able to link the products of burning fossil fuels with acid rain (SO 2 ), global warming (CO 2 ) & global dimming (particulates). You should also know about some developments to overcome problems with fuels Time to debate You will be in 4 groups (red, green, yellow, blue). Each group will have a point of view about the following statement by Gordon Brown; Britain will be a world leader in the use of rubbish as an alternative fuel source
