Look at these pictures and come up with a definition of what globalization means.

Globalization is: The world coming together as one Relating to different cultures Different perspectives Different places New things everyday Our definition of globalization is: The world becoming ‘smaller’ because of technology. We can travel faster and we are more able to influence each other’s thinking, economies and cultures. There are pros and cons to globalization.

Geoffrey Gaudreault, NPR Many of the world's T-shirts begin life as cotton in Texas, before becoming T-shirts in places such as China. They re-enter the U.S. market for sale and are eventually shipped to third world countries such as Tanzania for resale.

“It has been said that arguing against globalization is like arguing against the laws of gravity.” “Knowledge is power. Information is liberating. Education is the premise of progress, in every society, in every family.”     “We cannot wait for governments to do it all. Globalization operates on Internet time. Governments tend to be slow moving by nature, because they have to build political support for every step.” “We must ensure that the global market is embedded in broadly shared values and practices that reflect global social needs, and that all the world's people share the benefits of globalization.” Kofi Annan (Ghanaian diplomat, seventh secretary-general of the United Nations, 2001 Nobel Peace Prize) “Globalization, as defined by rich people like us, is a very nice thing... you are talking about the Internet, you are talking about cell phones, you are talking about computers. This doesn't affect two-thirds of the people of the world.” “Globalization is a policy, not an act of God” “ If you're totally illiterate and living on one dollar a day, the benefits of globalization never come to you.”  Jimmy Carter (American 39th US President (1977-81). Nobel Prize for Peace in 2002. b.1924) “Globalization is not something we can hold off or turn off . . . it is the economic equivalent of a force of nature -- like wind or water.” “Global poverty is a powder keg that could be ignited by our indifference.”  Bill Clinton (American 42nd US President (1993-2001), b.1946) “Globalization has changed us into a company that searches the world, not just to sell or to source, but to find intellectual capital - the world's best talents and greatest ideas.”  Jack Welch “In its current form, globalization cannot be sustained. Democratic societies will not support it. Authoritarian leaders will fear to impose it.”  John J. Sweeney

“Contrary to the received wisdom, global markets are not unregulated “Contrary to the received wisdom, global markets are not unregulated. They are regulated to produce inequality.”   Kevin Watkin “This is a very exciting time in the world of information. It's not just that the personal computer has come along as a great tool. The whole pace of business is moving faster. Globalization is forcing companies to do things in new ways.”    Bill Gates “Globalization is a strategy of liberalization that becomes an economic nightmare for the poor.”    Unknown “The most challenging issue raised by globalization is how we can all get along with each other in our race against time.”    Li Ka Shing “We must take care that globalization does not become something people become afraid of.”    Gerhard Schroeder “Globalization presumes sustained economic growth. Otherwise, the process loses its economic benefits and political support.”    Paul A. Samuelson “Together we can help transform the global economy into a global community.” Robert Alan “...the globalization that characterizes today’s economics goes beyond or eludes the sovereignty of individual states, and thus the power of their rulers. It is not they, but rather financial groups in control of vast amounts of capital, who decide upon their vertiginous passage through nations, without taking into account the serious crises they might generate.”  Patricio Aylwin Azócar "I would define globalization as the freedom for my group of companies to invest where it wants when it wants, to produce what it wants, to buy and sell where it wants, and support the fewest restrictions possible coming from labour laws and social conventions.“ (Percy Barnevik, President of the ABB Industrial Group) Changing the structure and rules of the global economy will require a mass movement based on messages of compassion, justice, and equality, as well as collaborative and democratic processes ... If we stay positive, inclusive, and democratic, we have a truly historic opportunity to build a global movement for social justice.  Medea Benjamin
