English 10 Vocabulary Week #6

Copy the words and definitions on your own paper: Flagrant: outrageous, glaringly bad Admonish: to warn, to reprimand Duress: done under force or compulsion Culprit: a guilty person Inexorable: inflexible, unrelenting Rampant: going unchecked, widespread Inane: foolish Ethics: rules, code of principles Concur: to agree Clandestine: secret, undercover

Using the words in context: During his first weeks at the new school, Bob noticed that cheating was rampant. He had always considered it rather inane to cheat on a test because of his code of ethics, and because so much was at stake. Apparently the other students didn’t concur. In fact, even the presence of a teacher did not intimidate them. Far from being clandestine about their cheating, the students were open and obvious in their dishonesty.

Using the words in context: The new principal at the school determined to do something about the flagrant cheating at the school. He issued bulletins and began to admonish those teachers who did not watch students closely during tests. Under duress, the teachers reported the names of the culprits. Many students failed their classes and were forced to take summer school. The principal’s inexorable campaign against cheating had paid off.
