Charge & Vision Cabinet Statistics Technology’s Role Transportation Cabinet Present an overview of the cabinet’s business objectives and mission, and how technology is used to achieve its goals. A few IT systems are denoted.

Transportation’s Charge The Cabinet is responsible for maintaining and improving the delivery of transportation services in the Commonwealth. All modes are addressed by the Cabinet. Established in 1912 as the Department of Highways, legislative actions have expanded and renamed the Cabinet to include Motor Transportation, Aeronautics plus selected other transportation Public Safety and Revenue functions.

Cabinet Statistics KENTUCKY’S ROADS CARRY:  85% of all traffic on 27,400 miles of state maintained roads  An average of 42,970 vehicles per day on the Interstates; 25% of all travel  An average of 9,500 vehicles per day on the Parkways; 4% all traffic  Public transportation systems carries 27M passengers each year DID YOU KNOW –  Vehicle travel has increased by 32% on KY’s highways, and 41% on KY’s Interstates in last decade  Constructing a highway takes an average of 8 yrs. from design to completion  17M vehicles (about 34M visitors) pass thru KY’s 28 rest areas & welcome centers each year  5M tons of blacktop rehabilitate KY’s highways each year  Constructing 1 mile of highway costs approx. $4M; resurfacing 1 mile costs $50K.

Cabinet Statistics Approximately 5,300 personnel working in 12 district offices and the central office share the responsibility for designing, building, maintaining and operating the transportation infrastructure and licensing processes in Kentucky. KENTUCKY CONTAINS: 762 Mi of Interstate 650 Mi of Parkways & Toll Road 3,272 Mi of Primary Roads 20,501 Mi of Secondary Roads 2,900 Mi of Railway THE KY TRANSPORTATION CABINET IS RESPONSIBLE FOR:  13,800 Bridges  8 Welcome centers  20 Rest areas  17 Equipment garages  23 Public transportation systems  8 Truck Rest Havens  17 Truck weigh stations  12 District (Regional) Offices  16 Traffic crew headquarters  125 County maintenance HQ’s.  838 Buildings and facilities  160 Licensed airports and heliports  A $1.4 Billion Annual Budget

Cabinet Statistics  Mows 100K acres of Right-of-Way  Manages 4,300 fleet vehicles  Maintains 3,200 miles of guardrail  Awards 763 highways contracts worth $792M EACH YEAR, KYTC –  Conducts 7,500 bridge inspections  Performs 80K truck safety inspect.  Registers 2.7M licensed drivers  Issues 620K drivers licenses  Issues 170K motor boat licenses  Maintains 550K highway signs  Installs/Replaces 75K signs  Spends 197,500 hrs litter removal  Uses 11,100 pieces of equipment

Approaches & Trends  Providing improved access to information for managers, employees, and public.  Focus on interfacing systems & data; reducing redundant data/systems.  Trying to move to visual presentation of information in place of text, matrixes.  Attempt tactical wins, with strategic directions in mind.

Setting Directions  Provide a secure computing environment.  Prioritize IT initiatives and expenditures at the agency level.  Use a standard architecture to enable technology growth and advances.  Standardize backend databases (Oracle) as much as practical.  Evaluate COTS software to address business problems.  Take proactive approach to meeting customers’ needs.
