IMPERIALISM Imperialism- The cultural, economic, or political domination by one country over another

ECONOMIC promote production, distribution, and consumption of goods and services desire to make money expand and control foreign trade create new markets for products acquire raw materials and cheap labor –gold, copper, coal, diamonds, ivory, salt, rubber, oil, slaves

POLITICAL desire to gain power and territory in the name of one’s country competed with other European countries to claim territory in Africa exercised military force with superior weapons gained prestige by winning colonies boosted national pride and security –Nationalism – strong feeling of pride in and devotion to one’s country

RELIGIOUS Desire to convert people to Christianity so all can be saved missionaries followed explorers into Africa to spread European values and moral beliefs and “civilization” to Africans Brought Christianity to Africa in order to “save” natives
