Sept. 16 – 19, Sucker Rod Pumping Workshop4 General Chairman Mike Poythress Mike started his oilfield career in 1979 as a Service Tech for Axelson, Inc, based out of Houston. In 1985 he was promoted to District Manager and transferred to the Giddings Austin Chalk. With the arrival of horizontal wells in the early 90’s, much of the industry focused on bigger pumps and more production. During this time Mike was responsible for both the Giddings and Pearsall Austin Chalk, which gave him exposure to the challenges of pumping horizontal wells – both above and below the kickoff point. In 1994 Mike moved back to Houston and began traveling to fields throughout the US. Over the next 19 years his career took him through positions at Weatherford, CDI Energy Services (Axelson Pump Shops) and NOV Wilson. For most of the last 15 years, the majority of Mike’s time was spent working with customers to reduce failures through tracking pump components and failures. He has had the honor to travel to and work on projects in Argentina, Australia, Brunei, Canada, Indonesia, Mexico, Russia, Trinidad, Ukraine and Venezuela – oh, and California. In March 2014 he joined ConocoPhillips’ Global Production Engineering Team as the Artificial Lift Specialist for Beam Pumping wells. Among Mike’s many blessings, is to have been married to his wife Susan, for the last 32 years. They have one daughter, Michelle, who is the very best daughter ever, even though she decided to avoid the oilfield and become a 3 rd grade teacher. Mike and Susan recently move back to Houston from behind the Pine Curtain (Tyler, Texas).

Sept. 16 – 19, Sucker Rod Pumping Workshop5 Keynote Speaker With an engineering degree from Oklahoma State University and graduate work in industrial engineering, Richard Spears has worked for 34 years in the upstream oil and gas industry, starting as a field engineer for Halliburton. Today, Richard is one of the managing directors of Spears & Associates, an oilfield market research firm founded in The firm has 400 clients worldwide, including all major oil companies, many national oil companies, all major service companies and over one hundred private and institutional investors. Richard has been with the firm since 1985 and leads the firm’s mergers and acquisitions support practice. Richard is a 28 year member of the Society of Petroleum Engineers and was an SPE Distinguished Lecturer 2005 ‐ He is also a 26 year member of the Association of Energy Service Companies. Richard is on the board of directors and is an owner of several oilfield service companies: Varel International, a global drill bit manufacturer; Federal, the company that built the devices that ultimately plugged the BP Macondo blowout; Allied Wireline, an oilfield service company that is commercializing GE’s digital openhole logging technology; and W-Technology, a manufacturer of MWD components.
