8 Present status of urban development and prospects:   Ministry of planning is nationally responsible for planning of the country. In each ministry there is a planning cell that are working for planning process.   For Urban Development there are 6 City Corporations, 298 municipalities & 4 Development Authority are working.   In 1974 Urban Population was 8.78% which increased 34% in the year The increased rate of urban population 3.5%. Due to urbanization additional housing units needed only in Dhaka city in every year.   Government as well as private developers are trying to accommodated through housing project. Government are working to meet up the Transportation, sanitation, & water supply. The private entrepreneurs are working in transportation sector.

10 Urban Management: City corporations & pourashavas are dealing with urban management. Urban centers, particularly, the large metropolitan cities in fact with major critical problems of inadequate transport, Housing Health, School, Employment, Recreation, Social Security etc. The solution or amelioration of such urban problems demand both sound urban planning and efficient urban management.

11 Regional Development status and prospects: Since the mid 70’s the Government has pursued a new policy of regional development in order to promote socio-economic development activities on regional and local basis, Bangladesh is a agrarian country. 66% of total population is living in rural area. So, rural development is one of the major factor for development of the country. 61 Zilla Parishad, 3 Hill Tracks Local Government Board, 480 Upzilla Parishad, 4,498 Union Parishad & Local Government (Village Parishad) are working for regional development. The Zilla Parishad, upzilla parishad, union parishad & village parishad are working for their local development in order to strengthening Local governance.

13 Regional Management: At the top of the regional management, Ministry of Local Govt. Rural Development and Ministry of Hill Tracts Affairs are responsible for development co- ordination of the regions. Under the regional bodies the different nation building departments are working for execution and implementation of the different projects of different Ministry and Departments.
