NORTHWEST ORDINANCE One of the greatest contributions of the Articles of Confederation Established the procedure for statehood Demonstrated US plans to expand westward by adding new states and not extending the existing ones New states would be = members of Union Banned slavery in NW Territory Ohio River became boundary b/w free and slave regions between the 13 states and Mississippi River Mandated establishment of public schools

Monroe Doctrine: FOREIGN POLICY  Monroe announced that the U.S would prevent European nations from interfering with independent American countries— U.S would stay neutral in wars between European nations and their American colonies, but, if battles took place in the Americas, the U.S would view such hostile actions as hostile actions against the U.S  1823-President James Monroe warned the nations of Europe not to interfere in the politics of North and South America
