American Samoa Department of Homeland Security FY08 Grant Grant amount: $24,600 Accomplishments: –Locate and erect tsunami danger zone signs –Create ESRI GIS data layers for specific elevations – 25, 50, 75 and 100’ above sea level Issues: –Shortage of manpower, inability to manipulate mapping data. –Lack of local expertise on tsunami risk parameters

American Samoa Department of Homeland Security FY09 Grant Grant amount: $34,000 Accomplishments –Two educational workshops for first responders and EAS committee members provided by ITIC and PTWC –Island-wide village level outreach with ITIC handouts and videos –Translation of elevation layers into evacuation route maps for schools, villages and government offices at greatest risk. 25 and 50 foot contours highlighted with route to safety marked on satellite imagery –Island wide post tsunami runup and flow depth surveys by ITIC team. Issues –Tsunami of September 29 th –Poor communication with grant specialist and difficulty with the web site –Lack of confidence in “safe” heights that work with local terrain limits –Outreach to be extended to include more languages and disciplines
