Session 1 - Local and national updates »Latest news on KS2, KS3 & GCSE Session 2 – Teaching & Learning »With a focus on Year 7 intervention Programme

Objectives To be updated as to developments in Mathematics at a local and national level To become familiar with materials to deliver effective intervention and share good practice

Starter Circular Challenge

Ofsted Documentation Update Revised handbook (January 2013) and subsidiary guidance (February 2013) inspection-of-maintained-schools-and-academieswww.ofsted.gov.uk/resources/subsidiary-guidance-supporting- inspection-of-maintained-schools-and-academies Little change for handbook but more changes in subsidiary guidance (especially Performance Management and Middle school specific sections) New subject specific guidance, published February supplementary-subject-specific-guidance-for-inspectors-making- judgemen supplementary-subject-specific-guidance-for-inspectors-making- judgemen

Raising the bar: developing able young mathematicians ACME’s recommendations: Providing an extended interpretation of the mathematics curriculum Access to the extended mathematics curriculum Assessment of the curriculum Initial Teacher Education and CPD should support implementation Develop support materials Develop appropriate accountability measures Beyond the classroom Cross-party support

Draft National Curriculum KS1 & 2 A high level of challenge Prescriptive content and a yearly teaching programme Removal of levels Pedagogy suggested within the content Emphasis on practice rather than building concepts Links between topics not emphasised Closing date: Tuesday 16 April earning/curriculum/nationalcurriculum2014

Draft National Curriculum KS1 & 2 Closing date: Tuesday 16 April 2013

Catch Up Funding Payments were made to local authorities on 31 January 2013 and to academies and Free Schools on 1 February Expectation that the funding will be directed to additional literacy and numeracy catch-up support during Year 7 The funding is not ring-fenced Schools should make decisions about how it is best used in the context of their existing strategies to help underperforming students catch up. Funding will be available until at least /y7-catch-uphttp://education.gov.uk/schools/pupilsupport/year7catchup/a /y7-catch-up

Catch Up Funding 106. Inspectors must also evaluate and report on the progress being made by pupils targeted for the Year 7 catch-up programme, including through analysis of summary data kept by the school.

Draft National Curriculum KS3 & 4 Through the mathematics content, pupils should be taught to: –Develop fluency –Reason mathematically –Solve problems Number –calculation and accuracy –Number theory Algebra: –expressing relations –using equations and functions Ratio, proportion and rate of change Geometry and measures Probability Statistics Closing date: Tuesday 16 April 2013

GCSE Reform Plans to have a single exam board will not proceed – instead existing GCSEs will be reformed Qualifications should be linear, with all assessments normally taken at the end of the course. Examinations will have fewer bite-sized and overly structured questions, and in mathematics there should be a greater emphasis on quantitative problem- solving. GCSEs will not force students to choose between higher and foundation tiers, for example, extension papers offering access to higher grades alongside a common core. Ofqual have been asked to produce new GCSEs for mathematics ready for first teaching in and-accountability-reform
