Fuels For Schools

II. Our Partnership I. Heating Schools With Wood 2 Main Topics:

I. Heating Schools With Wood: Darby, Montana example School wood heating systems Using biomass for heat

Darby, Montana Community driven Grant from USDA Forest Service Built summer now operational

Darby, Montana

School Wood Heating Systems Need support of school/community Engineering Assessment Source of chips – supply Some financial help

Use of Biomass: Schools are in the forests Many acres need treatment – all lands Good use of slash

II. Our Partnership: Who are we? What are we doing? What’s in the future?

Who are the Partners? USDA Forest Service Regions 1 & 4 5 State Foresters Schools Bitter Root RC&D Private sector businesses Others!

What are we doing? Funding/conducting Engineering Assessments Granting dollars for conversions Identifying existing financial resources Providing Technical Assistance

1 system built. 8 funded & in construction. 21 schools with completed Engineering Assessments. 4 more systems to be funded competitively in schools to be assessed in 2004.

The Future - after 2008 : Private Sector takes over Expertise is available Technology is commonplace Market competition keeps it strong

Conclusion: Fuels for schools is a common sense, win-win effort!
