Canada at the Winter Olympics

2010 Olympic Winter Games In Vancouver Vancouver, British Colombia, Canada, was selected to host the 2010 Winter Olympics on July 2, It marked the first time Canada hosted the Winter Olympics since 1988.

Winter Olympic Sports Canada Participates In. Canada entered athletes in all 15 Winter Olympic sports. The sports Canada entered athletes in were Alpine Skiing, Biathlon, Bobsleigh, Cross Country Skiing, Curling, Freestyle Skiing, Figure Skating, Ice Hockey, Luge, Nordic Combined, Short Track Speed Skating, Skeleton, Ski Jumping, Snowboarding, and Speed Skating.

Alpine Skiing The Canadian alpine skiing team has 22 members, 13 men and 9 women. As of February 25, 2010, neither the men's nor women's teams had won a medal in alpine skiing.

Biathlon Canada sent 8 biathletes to Vancouver. The Canadian men’s biathlon team consisted of Jean Philippe Leguellec, Marc-Andre Bedard, Brendan Green, and Robin Clegg. The Canadian women’s biathlon team consisted of Zina Kocher, Megan Imrie, Megan Tandy, and Rosanna Crawford.

Bobsleigh The Canadian bobsleigh team has 16 members, 12 men and 4 women. On February 24, Kaillie Humphries and Heather Moyse won gold in the two- women event. Helen Upperton and Shelley-Ann Brown won silver in the same event.

Cross Country Skiing The Canadian cross country skiing team consisted of 23 people, 15 men and 8 women. Canada has not won any medals in cross country skiing as of February 25.

Curling Canada has both a men’s and a women’s curling team entered in the 2010 Winter Olympics. The men’s team consists of Kevin Martin, John Morris, Marc Kennedy, and Ben Hebert. The women’s team consists of Cheryl Bernard, Susan O’Conner, Carolyn Darbyshire, and Cori Bartel.

Freestyle Skiing Canada’s full 18 freestyle skiing team was announced on January 24, Alexandre Bilodeau won gold in the men’s mogul and Jennifer Heil won silver in the women’s mogul. Ashleigh Mclvor won gold in women’s ski cross.

Figure Skating Canada entered 12 athletes in figure skating. Tessa Virtue & Scott Moir won gold in ice dancing. Joannie Rochette won bronze in ladies’ single figure skating.

Ice Hockey Canada’s women’s hockey team beat the U.S. women’s team on February 25 to win the gold medal. Canada’s men’s team, although losing to the U.S., managed to fight its way back to the finals, where they beat the U.S. 2-3 in overtime to win the gold.

Luge Canada’s luge team consisted of 10 athletes, six individuals and two double teams. Canada failed to win any medals in the luge events.

Nordic Combined Canada sent a single athlete, Jason Myslicki, to compete in the nordic combined. He ranked ranked in the 40s in all the events he took part in.

Short Track Speed Skating Canada sent a full team of five men and five women to compete. Men’s team: Charles Hamelin won gold in the 500m, Francois-Louis Tremblay won bronze in the 500m, and Charles Hamelin, Francois Hamelin, Oliver Jean, Francois-Louis Tremblay, and Guillaume Bastille won gold in the 5000m relay. Women’s team: Marianne St-Gelais won silver in the 500m, and Kalyna Roberge, Jessica Gregg, Marianne St-Gelais, and Tania Vincent won silver in 3000m relay.

Skeleton Canada entered a full team of 6 athletes in skeleton. Jon Montgomery won gold in men’s skeleton.

Ski Jumping Canada’s ski jumping team consisted of Stefan Read, MacKenzie Boyd-Clowes, Trevor Morrice, and Eric Mitchell. None of them reached the final.

Snowboarding Canada entered a full 18 member team in snowboarding. Jasey-Jay Anderson won gold in men’s parallel giant slalom, Mike Robertson won silver in men’s snowboard cross, and Maelle Ricker won gold in women’s snowboard cross.

Speed Skating Canada’s men’s speed skating failed to win a medal. Canada’s women’s speed skating team did much better, with Kristina Groves winning silver in the 1500m and a bronze in the 3000m, Clara Hughes winning bronze in the 5000m, and Christine Nesbitt winning gold in the 1000m. Mathieu Giroux, Lucas Makowsky, and Denny Morrison won gold in men’s tesam pursuit.
