1 Gender perspectives in migration analysis  Migration statistics in Norway  Gender perspectives in the analysis of migration statistics Kristin Egge-Hoveid Coordinator of Gender and Equality Related Statistics Division for Social Welfare Statistics, Statistics Norway UNECE Work Sessions on Gender statistics, Geneva March

Central Population Register (CPR) the main source for population and social statistics in Norway CPR includes all residents All residents are registered in the CPR with a unique PIN All immigrants are given a PIN when they register with the immigration authorities All vital events are registered in the CPR –Births, deaths, marriages –National and international migration And demographic characteristics –Sex,age, marital status, number of children, place of birth –Citizenship, national background, and year of first immigration All other national administrative registers based on individuals use this PIN.

Data on individuals in Statistics Norway possibilities for linking different registers …and a lot more, all broken down by sex

Other sources Surveys –Survey on living conditions among immigrants (LCI)  Norwegian language skills  Feeling of loneliness  Perceived discrimination  Ties to the country of origin and to Norway –New LCI in 2015  Values

Definitions of immigrants and figures as of Number Proporton of total Immigrants: Persons immigrated to Norway, born abroad to two foreign born parents ,2 % Second generation: Children born in Norway to two immigrant parents ,0 % Both groups ,2 %

Largest groups of immigrants by country background and gender percent women

Analyses of migration statistics The registers –Wide range of variables –Longitudinal analysis –Immigrants living conditions –Integration of immigrants Surveys Variables not provided in the registers: –Opinions, values –Perceived discrimination Analysis of the Norwegian migration statistics –Profound founding –But not a good tradition for gender analysis

Analysis of migration statistics – gender perspectives Increase our knowledge concerning: Gender differences in integration Gender equality challenges among immigrants Show diversity among groups (country background) Show differences between generations

Research areas where gender perspectives are important Labour – Integration Education – Future possibilities/resources Demography – TRF and marriage patterns Crime – Domestic violence, exposure to and exercise of violence Values – Gender differences in attitudes towards gender equality Political participation – ability to shape society

Labour Key to integration –Economic independence –Promotes language skills –Domestic equality –Better mental health –Protection against loneliness and isolation

Education “Male dropout and female success” Future unemployment among young male immigrants? Work force participation of highly educated immigrant women when they establish a family? However! Large differences between immigrants and Second generation

Planning ahead Exploit the possibilities of gender perspectives in our analyses even better. More insight into values, and attitudes of gender equality through the new survey on Living Conditions among immigrants. Better knowledge of gender differences in immigrants educational level through new survey on immigrants education.
