Professionalism For the Home Care RN

Professionalism  Working in less “formal” healthcare environment, but still PROFESSIONAL (ie. Working under your RN LICENSE..)  What is OK to vary from Nursing School/ hospital positions, what is not??  Always error on the side of caution; if you don’t know, ASK!

Importance of Professionalism in the work environment To earn and keep respect among: Peers Other HCPs Patients/ patient families Supervisors/ management Respect To keep boundaries established Identifies you as the care provider Boundaries PROTECT YOR LICENSE Stay within company policy License

Professionalism: the BASICS Professional Dress ▫What is the patient/ parent ok with VS. what is ok to do as a professional? Attendance ▫Notice when sick ▫Notice for Vacation/ plans Timeliness What about…. Yoga Pants? No Shorts? No Open Toed Shoes? No Badge? YES

Professional Boundaries Patient discussion HIPAA Family/ social issues discussion BUSINESS HOURS Type/ Amount of communication Therapeutic relationship Physical/ Emotional Social Issues “Friendships”/ Communications out-side of work Patient issues ParentsPatients Nurses/ HCPs Management / Supervisors 1. Does this DIRECTLY benefit the well-being of my assigned patients? 2. Is this within the scope of my Practice?

Professional Communications… Phone  Calling Providers  Be prepared and professional  Text messaging  No patient names  Use with Patients  HIPAA!  Do Not or text the patient’s name to ANYONE. impression does this give your management team/ other healthcare providers/ families??  Titles/ Addressing s  “Mr.”/ “Mrs.” / always sign your name and contact information to s  Verbiage/ Grammar/ punctuation/ spelling…..  “Ranting”  It’s unneccesary and unprofessional. If you are frustrated/ irritated/ etc. it’s always best to meet and talk face to face

Supervisors  9-5  Best to contact work number, leave message  Text-messaging?  Time-sensitive  Imperative information **When to contact On-Call Other RNs/ HCPs  About patients?  Professional verbiage  Time sensitive, considerate  Friendships/ Social activities ?
