Isaiah 53

A Study of Isaiah 53 Certain Verses From Isaiah 53 Are Used To Advance The Notion Of “The Imputation Of Sins” To Christ: “The passage … quoted above, together with the verses from Isaiah, indicate that it was God the Father who put our sins on Christ. How could that be? In the same way in which Adam’s sins were imputed to us, so God imputed our sins to Christ; that is, he thought of them as belonging to Christ, and, since God is the ultimate judge and definer of what really is in the universe, when God thought of our sins as belonging to Christ then in fact they actually did belong to Christ.” Wayne Grudem, Systematic Theology, page 574.

A Study of Isaiah 53 The Doctrine Says That Responsibility For Man’s Sin Was Literally Transferred To Christ: “II. Imputation of the Sin of Man to Christ. In contrast to the imputation of Adam’s sin to the race, often considered a real imputation, the imputation of the sin of man to Christ is considered judicial, and related to the death of Christ on the cross. Christ ‘hath borne our griefs, and carried our sorrows... But he was wounded for our transgressions... the Lord hath laid on him the iniquity of us all’ (Isaiah 53:4-6)..... Though the word impute is not actually used to express this idea in the NT, the idea is clearly stated in other words.” Baker’s Dictionary of Theology, page 282.

A Study of Isaiah 53 The View Is Calvinistic: Some Choose To Reject The Notion Of “Imputation Of Adam’s Sin To Man” (Inherited Depravity), But Accept The Notion Of “Imputation Of Man’s Sin To Christ” However, The Two Concepts Are Connected Both Views Are Equally Wrong, For Both Views Reject Personal Responsibility And Accountability For Sin

A Study of Isaiah 53 The Calvinist “Doctrine Of Imputation” Also Known As: The Doctrine Of “Vicarious Death” Or “Vicarious Suffering” The Doctrine Of “Substitutionary Death” Or “Substitutionary Atonement” The Doctrine Of “Penal Satisfaction” Or “Penal Substitution” The Doctrine Teaches That Christ “Took Man’s Place” On The Cross

A Study of Isaiah 53 Verse 4 - “Surely he hath borne (nasa) our griefs, and carried (sabal) our sorrows: yet we did esteem him stricken, smitten of God, and afflicted.” “Nasa” Means “To Remove” Exodus 32:32; 34:7; Numbers 14:18 Translate “Nasa” As “Forgive” Gen. 50:17 - Joseph Was Asked To Forgive (Nasa) His Brothers (No Transferral Of Sin) Exodus 10:17 - Moses Was Asked To Forgive Pharaoh (No Transferral Of Sin) 1 Samuel 15:25 - Samuel Was Asked To Forgive Saul (No Transferral Of Sin)

A Study of Isaiah 53 Verse 4 - “Surely he hath borne (nasa) our griefs, and carried (sabal) our sorrows: yet we did esteem him stricken, smitten of God, and afflicted.” “Sabal” Is A Synonym Of Nasa - Inspired Commentary In Matthew 8:16-17: “And when even was come, they brought unto him many possessed with demons: and he cast out the spirits with a word, and healed all that were sick: that it might be fulfilled which was spoken through Isaiah the prophet, saying: Himself took our infirmities, and bare our diseases.” OBSERVE: Jesus Did Not Have Demons, Leprosy, Blindness Or Sickness “Transferred” To Him By “Taking” Or “Bearing” These Conditions - He Took Them AWAY

A Study of Isaiah 53 Verse 5 - “But he was wounded for (minee) our transgressions, he was bruised for (minee) our iniquities: the chastisement of our peace was upon him; and with his stripes we are healed.” “For” (Minee) Means “Because Of” Or “On Account Of” (Not “in place of” or “instead of”) “Chastisement Of Our Peace” Refers To The “Chastening He Took To Bring Us Peace” (Keil & Delitzsch) Refers To Christ’s Suffering Before And During The Cross

A Study of Isaiah 53 Verse 5 - “But he was wounded for (minee) our transgressions, he was bruised for (minee) our iniquities: the chastisement of our peace was upon him; and with his stripes we are healed.” “With His Stripes You Are Healed” Quoted By Peter In 1 Peter 2:24: “...who his own self bare our sins in his body upon the tree, that we, having died unto sins, might live unto righteousness; by whose stripes ye were healed.” “Bare” Is “Anaphero,” Which Is Also Used In The Sept. Version Of Isaiah 53:11 (Sabal) - Means “To Remove” Or “Take Away”

A Study of Isaiah 53 Hebrews 9:26 & 28: Inspired Commentary Hebrews 9:26 “..else must he often have suffered since the foundation of the world: but now once at the end of the ages hath he been manifested to put away (athetesin) sin by the sacrifice of himself.” Hebrews 9:28 “..so Christ also, having been once offered to bear (anaphero) the sins of many, shall appear a second time, apart from sin, to them that wait for him, unto salvation.” 26 - Jesus Died To “Put Away” (Remove) Sin 28 - Jesus Died To “Bear” (Take Away) Sin Conclusion: Jesus “Bore” Our Sins In The Sense That He Took Them Away - No Transference Of Sins To Himself!

A Study of Isaiah 53 “Bear” In Hebrews 7:27; 9:28 & 1 Peter 2:24 Hebrews 7:27 “..who needeth not daily, like those high priests, to offer up (anaphero) sacrifices, first for his own sins, and then for the sins of the people: for this he did once for all, when he offered up (anaphero) himself.” Hebrews 7:27. Remember: “Anaphero” Also Used In Hebrews 9:28 (“Bear The Sins Of Many”) And 1 Peter 2:24 (“Bore Our Sins”) If “Bear” Means Substitution, Then Was The High Priest A Substitute? For “Himself?”

A Study of Isaiah 53 Verse 6 - “All we like sheep have gone astray; we have turned every one to his own way; and Jehovah hath laid on him the iniquity of us all.” “Laid On Him” (Paga) Means “To Deliver Up” Or “Make Intercession” - SEE VERSE 12: “Therefore I will divide with him a portion with the many, and he shall divide the spoil with the strong, because he poured out his soul to death, and was numbered with the transgressors; yet he bore the sin of many, and makes intercession (PAGA) for the transgressors.” Isaiah 53:12 Is A Commentary On Isaiah 53:6: God Delivered Christ Up On Account Of Sin God “Laid TO” Jesus The Treatment Of Sin – “Jesus the Actuator”

A Study of Isaiah 53 Verse 6 - “All we like sheep have gone astray; we have turned every one to his own way; and Jehovah hath laid on him the iniquity of us all.” The Septuagint (Greek O.T.) Uses Paradidomi - Means “To Deliver Up” Or “Intercede” -- N.T. Commentary... Romans 8:32 - “He that spared not his own Son, but delivered him up (paradidomi) for us all, how shall he not also with him freely give us all things?” Ephesians 5:2 - “...and walk in love, even as Christ also loved you, and gave himself up (paradidomi) for us, an offering and a sacrifice to God for an odor of a sweet smell.” No Transference Or Imputation Of Sin!

A Study of Isaiah 53 Verse 7 - “He was oppressed, and he was afflicted, yet he opened not his mouth: he is brought as a lamb to the slaughter, and as a sheep before her shearers is dumb, so he openeth not his mouth.” “Oppressed” And “Afflicted” Refer To Jesus’ Suffering At The Hands Of Tormentors “Opened Not His Mouth” Describes His Reaction To Mistreatment This Verse Does Not Describe What The Father Did To Christ!

A Study of Isaiah 53 Verse 8 - “He was taken from prison and from judgment: and who shall declare his generation? for he was cut off out of the land of the living: for the transgression of my people was he stricken.” “Taken From Prison And Judgment” Refers To His Incarceration By The Jews “Cut Off” From The Land Of The Living Refers To His Death “Stricken” Refers To The Entire Process Of Incarceration, Beatings, Judgment & Death

A Study of Isaiah 53 Verse 8 - “He was taken from prison and from judgment: and who shall declare his generation? for he was cut off out of the land of the living: for the transgression of my people was he stricken.” “For The Transgression Of My People” (“For” Is Again “On Account Of” ASV Implies Substitution - “For the transgressions of my people for whom the stroke (was due)?” (Note parenthesis & “?”) NASB Has “was due” In Italics NOT IN THE ORIGINAL

A Study of Isaiah 53 Verse 9 - “And he made his grave with the wicked, and with the rich in his death; because he had done no violence, neither was any deceit in his mouth.” “Grave With The Wicked” - Crucified Between Two Criminals “With The Rich In Death” - Tomb Provided By Joseph Of Arimathea “Had Done No Violence, Neither Any Deceit” (1 Peter 2:22) - No Sin (Heb. 7:26) - Entirely Innocent - Mock Trial - Punished Unjustly

A Study of Isaiah 53

Verse 12 - “Therefore will I divide him a portion with the great, and he shall divide the spoil with the strong; because he hath poured out his soul unto death: and he was numbered with the transgressors; and he bare the sin of many, and made intercession for the transgressors.” “Portion With The Great... Spoil With The Strong - Reentrance Into Heaven, Victory Over Satan, High Name, Exalted Position “Soul” Again “Nephesh” - Living Being - Life “Numbered With Transgressors” = Classified As A Sinner (crucifixion accounts, Ps. 22)

A Study of Isaiah 53 Verse 12 - “Therefore will I divide him a portion with the great, and he shall divide the spoil with the strong; because he hath poured out his soul unto death: and he was numbered with the transgressors; and he bare the sin of many, and made intercession for the transgressors.” “Bare” Is Again “Nasa,” As In V. 4, Meaning To Forgive Or Remove (Brown, Driver and Briggs State The Meaning “to take, take away, carry off, forgive”) “Made Intercession” Again Paga,” As In V. 6, K&D - “delivered for their iniquities”
