EQ 2: WHAT IS THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN NATURE AND NURTURE? BR: on handout

 Is personality formed by heredity (genes) or environment?

Is intelligence innate (born with) or learned by experience?

 Are sexual behaviors and preference “pushed” by our inner biology or “pulled” by the external environment and experiences

 Should we treat depression as a disorder of the brain or a disorder of thought?

 Are gender differences biologically predisposed or socially constructed?

 What are we talking about??  Nature vs. Nurture! In notes write: Nature: Nurture: Take notes on what each theory believes about personality development

NATURE VS NURTURE  Nature: What we are born with- Our biology  Nurture: our environment and experiences

HOW DOES THE VIDEO SUPPORT NATURE AND NURTURE? Watch the video and write a piece of evidence in support of the nature theory and nurture theory

 How would identical vs. fraternal twin studies help prove nature or nurture?

 Identical twins: develop from single fertilized egg that splits in 2-genetically identical  Fraternal twins: develop from separate eggs. Genetically no more similar than ordinary siblings

 How would adoption studies help prove nature or nurture?

 Adopted children: 2 groups of relatives: genetic of biological family and the adoptive/environmental family

EQ 3: WHAT EVIDENCE PROVES NATURE AND NURTURE? Bell ringer: Copy T-chart in your notes and for each example write evidence in correct column NatureNurture

 Different versions of the gene CYP2A6 dictate the number of cigarettes a person smokes. Those with one version of the gene metabolize nicotine, and thus, need to light up more often.

 Twin study finding: monozygotic (identical) twins raised separately are highly similar in IQ (0.86), more so than dizygotic (fraternal) twins raised together (0.6) and much more than adoptive siblings (almost 0.0).

 In April of this year, a team led by Susan Bergeson at the University of Texas at Austin found 20 gene candidates that could influence excessive drinking.

 Women smokers are more likely than men to be affected by peer pressure.  Mayo Clinic researchers found that exposure to pesticides and industrial chemicals, play a greater role in men developing Parkinson’s disease.

READING ACTIVITY 1.Individually read your section and talk to the text. Write where you get confused, connections, summaries, predictions, etc. 2.Talk through confusions with the group and discuss which side this proves and why 3.Choose three pieces of evidence to add to T- chart

 You will make a small poster and include: 1. A title (nature or nurture) 2. The main idea of your section (which side does it support and why) 3. 2 pieces of specific evidence that prove the main idea

GALLERY WALK  Rotate to each poster  Read poster and discuss with group  Add 2 pieces of evidence to T-chart
