Four Trends and Opportunities 1. Demographics to have a huge impact on the labour market. 2. Organizations will no longer be able to pay lip service to Succession Planning and Career Development. 3. Leadership culture will be key to recruitment and retention. 4. Key to success is leadership, leadership, leadership. 1. Demographics to have a huge impact on the labour market. 2. 1.Demographics to have a huge impact on the labour market If you are under 40, you will have a commodity that will be in short supply and high demand for years to come. 15% drop in yr. old age group during the period 2000 – Talented organizational leaders will be in short supply. It will fast become a sellers market. If you are under 50, you have an incredible opportunity. 2.Organizations will no longer be able to pay lip service to Succession Planning and Career Development As retirements substantially increase, organizations have to be ready to replace the departed. If not, they will potentially be hit hard by a talent shortage in the coming years. Career development planning will be key in retaining talented people who will be competed for in the market. 3.Leadership culture will be key to recruitment and retention Leadership culture will be critical factor in decision to stay or move to another organization. Leaders who can develop positive culture will be highly valued. CEO’s increasingly focusing on importance of candor in their leadership teams. Team members’ ability to effectively challenge each others ideas so that best possible solution is arrived at while maintaining a positive team environment. 4.Key to success is leadership, leadership, leadership Regardless of the sector, leadership competencies are increasingly key. In health, clearly focusing on competencies and experience is required to lead positive change in large complex systems. Yet there are limited experience opportunities in such roles and limited investment in development of such competencies. My advice; develop your own theoretical and practical understanding of leadership in large system context. Take on formal or informal leadership responsibilities, not in your own silo, but across an organization. Develop a body of leadership work that superiors or potential employers will be quick to recognize and appreciate. Regardless of the sector, leadership competencies are increasingly key.
