Hazardous Materials The Hazardous Materials Transportation Act of 1975 occurred because in the 1970s many landfills throughout the United States began to refuse hazardous materials. As a result, illegal dumping became common. Enforcement of antidumping laws was weak. In response to the need for better regulations and enforcement, Congress passed the Hazardous Materials Transportation Act The Hazardous Materials Transportation Act of 1975 set extensive guidelines for carriers of hazardous materials. They must classify, package, and label materials appropriately, use specific hazardous material placards for shipments, and have suitable shipping papers at all times.

Agencies That are Related U.S. Department of Energy (DOE)- is responsible for the shipment of commercial radioactive waste for storage as well as nuclear weapons and defense nuclear waste for storage or use The Department of Transportation (DOT) is responsible for all hazardous material including radioactive material; the Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) is responsible for all commercial activities dealing with nuclear power plants Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) enforces motor carrier regulations The Federal Railroad Administration (FRA) enforces rail carrier regulations Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) enforces air carrier regulations, he U.S. Coast Guard enforces maritime shipping regulations Considerable hazardous waste regulation authority is given to the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) The National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) is the primary federal agency tasked with investigating every civil aviation accident in the US
