Summary of Main Points Substance abuse detoxification programs are short term, one to two week, inpatient programs that work with persons that are unable to withdraw from substance abuse using outpatient counseling or other less intensive methods. At any given day about 1% of persons receiving substance abuse treatment in New Jersey are in detoxification programs. On a yearly basis, about 10% of persons receiving substance abuse treatment will have gone through a detoxification program.

Summary of Main Points New Jersey has substantially fewer substance abuse detoxification programs than would be expected based on population size. Federal estimates are that 605,000 persons in New Jersey have an untreated drug or alcohol problem that would be improved by treatment. In 2009, approximately 5,115 persons received services in a residential non-hospital detoxification program in New Jersey. Approximately, an additional 60,500 persons might benefit from residential detoxification services.

2009 New Jersey Admissions by Level of Care

Summary of Main Points In 2009 Mercer and the five counties contiguous to it had approximately 18,029 admissions to substance abuse programs. While the area has one-third of the population it has one-sixth of the state’s detoxification programs. Approximately 200,000 persons who have untreated alcohol and drug abuse live in these six counties.

Summary of Main Points New Jersey Department of Health Services licensing records indicate that there are seven hospital-based detoxification programs in New Jersey. None of the seven are in Mercer County and only one is in the five counties contiguous to Mercer.
