The Role of Leadership for People with Disabilities Steve Phillips Period 3: Leadership Class

What is a Disability A disability is a limitation of a person’s abilities to perform certain operations in the body or in the mind Two Types of Disabilities  Physical- A physical disability is a limitation to the human body by an injury or a limitation due to muscle restricting body motions  Mental- A mental disability is a limitation of activity of the mind due to injury at birth or in accident causing brain damage. Physical and Mental disabilities can be combined in many different ways A disability in some cases may require additional help depending on the condition of the person.

The Americans with Disabilities Act of 1990 The Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) of 1990 is a federal law that prohibits the discrimination of businesses against people with disabilities Signed on July 26, 1990 by President George H. W. Bush 43,000,000 Americans have one or more physical or mental disabilities This number is increasing in the population ADA helps prevent society from discriminating against the disabled ADA creates therapeutic program funding and jobs for the disabled ADA creates an opportunity for a person to receive therapy (E.g., PT & OT)

How people benefit from ADA ADA is a law that people and businesses must adjust to serve and to create access for special needs. ADA covers special needs workers to provide accommodations on the job Job applicants may be asked their capabilities to perform a job. Alcoholics are not coved by ADA Acquiring or modifyinZg equipment and devices, adjusting or modifying examinations, training materials, or policies, and providing qualified readers or interpreters are some examples of ADA

Civil Rights Act Compared to ADA The Civil Rights Act 1964 – forbids employers from discriminating in hiring, paying, training, promoting or discharging employees based on race, color, religion, national origin or sex The Civil Right Act is a background to ADA The Civil Rights protects freedom of blacks as ADA protects the disabled rights

ADA Benefits in the Community ADA helps several programs for the disabled  SSI Supplementary Service Income-Provides financial assistance for purchase every day needs (e.g.. assisted technology to help the disabled) ADA helps provide therapeutic services to for physical needs Provides waivers for insurance for services and/or equipment to assist the disabled (ex. Wheelchairs)
