The New Monterey Bay League: League Realignment CCS By-laws allow league configuration review every 2 years. Conference schools engage in realignment talks. What is best for student-athletes and high school sports? March Southern Conference leagues discuss realignment. Proposal made to merge MBL & TCAL and create larger “Equity” league Overwhelming vote (38-1) in favor to form new league new league comes into existence From 7 schools to 15

MBL Equity League Equity league schools divide into 2 or more divisions Each division has at least 6 schools competing Each division is “League” unto itself with division champions and CCS playoff qualifier(s) Schools placed in division for each sport based on strength of program in that sport Division A: MBL-Gabilan Division B: MBL-Pacific

MBL- Gabilan & MBL- Pacific Schools may be placed in MBL- Gabilan for one sport & in MBL- Pacific for another depending on strength of particular sports program Division placement reviewed by league every year Example of one program in different divisions: Basketball teams- Boys in Gabilan and Girls in Pacific, or Boys in Pacific and Girls in Gabilan

The New Monterey Bay League: An Equity League What are the benefits? Who governs it? What are the next steps ? How does it affect our school?

What is the benefit of being an Equity League? Principal Benefit: To give student-athletes more opportunities and enriching experiences by grouping schools with similar competitive strength Often participation levels increase with equitable play- along with the fun! Long standing history of successful equity leagues within the CCS have shown positive results Other CCS equity leagues: Blossom Valley Athletic League (BVAL), Peninsula Athletic League (PAL), Santa Clara Valley Athletic League (SCVAL)

Who governs the new Monterey Bay League? Board of Managers: Every CIF/CCS league is governed by Principals, Administrators, and/or designee representing each school within the league Athletic Directors: The BOM receives recommendations from each director representing each school within the league Coaches: The AD receives input and recommendations from their school’s coaches December 2011: First- time meeting of the newly created 15 member MBL Board of Managers. Divisions MBL-Gabilan & MBL- Pacific are approved

What are the next steps for the New MBL? MBL Athletic Directors continue to meet throughout the school year to make recommendations to the Board of Managers regarding sport-by-sport team division placement, general by-laws and operating plans, and individual sport by-laws MBL leaders plan to have everything in place, including a league budget, by the end of the school year and be ready for the sports seasons

How does it affect our school? Anticipate the competitive experience will be more exciting and gratifying for student-athletes and fans alike. New competition can bring new relationships and new opportunities. Athletic league life will be changed for each school in the new league League schools in each sport may differ. Teams may not always see the same schools in each sport Teams may differ significantly from those we have grown accustomed to in recent years

The New Monterey Bay League Bigger & Better: Created to benefit student- athletes by providing a variety of quality athletic programs, levels of participation, and equitable competition.
