SACRAMENT DEVELOPMENT BY GERICKSON LOPEZ

SACRAMENT THE WORD SACRAMENT COMES FROM THE LATIN WORD SACRAMENTUM FOR CHRISTIANS, SACRAMENTS ARE RITES INSTITUTED BY CHRIST TO MAKE GRACE AVAILABLE TO HUMAN BEINGS IN A SENSE, THE SACRAMENTS ARE A WAY TO LIVE THE LIFE CHRIST LIVED.

SACRAMENTS AVAILABLE BY THE 4 TH CENTURY, ONLY BAPTISM AND EUCHARIST HAD BEEN MADE SACRAMENTS FROM THE ORIGINAL SACRAMENTS. BAPTISM IS THE SACRAMENT BY WHICH ONE IS INDUCTED INTO THE CHURCH. THE EUCHARIST IS A RITUAL MEAL IN WHICH CHRIST WAS MADE TRULY PRESENT AND AVAILABLE TO ALL BAPTIZED CHRISTIANS WHO WISHED TO RECEIVE HIM.

BAPTISM SACRAMENT OF INITIATION ADULTS WERE MORE COMMONLY BAPTIZED THAN CHILDREN DURING THIS TIME PERIOD. CHRISTIAN BELIEVERS BECAME CATECHUMENS AND REMAINED CATECHUMENS FOR MANY YEARS BEFORE THEY WERE BAPTIZED CATECHUMENS WERE TREATED DIFFERENTLY AT MASS. THEY WERE NOT ALLOWED TO VIEW THE EUCHARIST. (GOT KICKED OUT OUT OF MASS)

BAPTISM PART DUEX WHEN CATECHUMENS WERE READY FOR BAPTISM THEY MADE AN ANNOUNCEMENT THE FIRST OF LENT BAPTISM ITSELF WAS ADMINISTERED IN LARGE BODIES OF WATER ON EASTER DAY BEFORE DAWN. CANDIDATES WERE STRIPPED OFF THEIR CLOTHING, BATHED IN OIL, AND WERE IMMERSED THREE TIMES WHILE ACCEPTING THEIR BELIED IN EACH PERSON OF THE TRINITY.

EUCHARIST THE WORD EUCHARIST MEANS “THANKSGIVING” THE EUCHARIST ORIGINATED DURING THE LAST SUPPER WHEN JESUS SHARED THE BREAD AND WINE WITH HIS APOSTLES. TO DO THIS SACRAMENT WAS TO BE DRAWN INTO DEEPER UNION WITH CHRIST AND TO BE EVEN SHARE DIVINE LIFE. THE PARTICIPANTS DID NOT BELIEVE THEY WERE ACTUALLY EATING HUMAN FLESH BUT INSTEAD THEY BELIEVED THEY WERE EATING PART OF GOD WHO IS LIFE GIVING.

EUCHARIST PART DOS THEY DID NOT BELIEVE THEY WERE ACTUALLY EATING HUMAN FLESH BUT INSTEAD THEY BELIEVED THEY WERE EATING PART OF GOD WHO IS LIFE GIVING. (STILL BELIEVED THEY WERE TRULY FLESH AND NOT A SYMBOL OF IT) AS CYRIL OF ALEXANDRIA STATED:

OTHER SACRAMENTS TRIVIA PENANCE: WAS INSTITUTED AROUND THE SECOND AND THIRD CENTURIES BECAUSE IT WAS A WAY TO ALLOW THE LAPSED BACK INTO THE CHURCH TO COME BACK TO THE CHURCH. IT BECAME MORE POPULAR IN THE 11 TH CENTURY BECAUSE IT WAS A WAY TO REDEEM ALL SIN AFTER BAPTISM AND BE ALLOWED INTO HEAVEN. CONFIRMATION: THE SACRAMENT OF CONFIRMATION COMPLETES THE SACRAMENT OF BAPTISM. IF BAPTISM IS THE SACRAMENT OF RE-BIRTH TO A NEW AND SUPERNATURAL LIFE, CONFIRMATION IS THE SACRAMENT OF MATURITY AND COMING OF AGE. IT BECAME A POPULAR SACRAMENT DURING THE MIDDLE AGES.

OTHER SACRAMENTS TRIVIA PART DOIS HOLY ORDERS: THE SACRAMENT IS A SYMBOL OF APOSTOLIC SUCCESSION. IT BECAME AN OFFICIAL SACRAMENT ON MATRIMONY: IS ACKNOWLEDGED BY JESUS WHEN HE ATTENDED THE MARRIAGE AT CANA. IT WAS CONSIDERED AN ALTERNATIVE FOR THOSE JUST COULDN’T REMAIN CHASTE THROUGHPUT THEIR LIFE. IT IS A SACRAMENT DEVOTED TO JUSTIFY WHY BEING A VIRGIN WAS A GOOD THING. IT BECAME A SACRAMENT IN ANOINTING OF THE SICK: ORIGINATED FROM JESUS’ HEALINGS. THE SACRAMENT FIRST APPEARED IN 416. IT WAS THE ULTIMATE FORM OF PENANCE TO BE ADMINISTERED BEFORE DEATH. IT BECAME A SACRAMENT IN 1551.
