LETS TAKE THE BUS!

The Transportation Problem 1 % of world vehicle population 10 % of fatal injuries “Traffic crashes could become the fifth leading cause of death by 2030 without intervention.” (World Research Institute 2015).

WHAT WE DID IN COPENHAGEN Difference in the urban challenges Challenges for Copenhagen Challenges for Delhi

Bus Transportation Problems for India NOT SAFE + NOT CONVENIENT = NOT ATTRACTIVE

Understanding of the Issues

Standard Issues faced Own on an average two to three cars No/Very less AC Buses Does match their status symbol Have to walk average of two to three kilometer to reach a bus stop (connectivity issue) Have to change over multiple times Poorly maintained infrastructure Buses are not comfortable Not reliable (Time= Money) Low frequency

Research Methodology Stakeholder mapping Field research Desk research Ghaziabad old bus stop. 45 min interview with Harinder Singh (chalak). Visit to BRT in Delhi – Observations Interview with Mr. Rakesh Katyal from Delhi Integrated Multi-Modal Transit System Ltd. Desk research Lectures on Traffic Management Systems, Accessibility etc.

Target Segment

Major Stakeholders for Bus Transportation in Delhi Transport Ministry DTC Delhi Transport Corporation DIMTS Delhi Integrated Multi-Modal Transit System Ltd. DTIDC Delhi Transport Infrastructure Development Corporation Ltd. UTTIPEC Unified Traffic And Transportation Infrastructure Under Delhi Government Manage the Green and Red Busses Manage the privately licensed Orange Busses Manage the Signage and Advt. at Bus Stops Manage the unified planning

Main challenges to Delhi urban bus transportation Missing link between urban planning and transportation planning. Both happen without much alignment. Certain areas are developed without sound transportation access. Many transport infrastructure improvements are pursued without considering future needs, even existing simultaneous urbanisation trends or city development plans More public resistance to bus service expansions than subsurface modes like metro. As buses present competition to other road users such as cars and motorcycles, addition of new lines and extension of existing ones are met by public outcry even though they actually contribute to reducing congestion by requiring much less space per passenger than cars Strong cultural bias towards convenient door to door transport. People are reluctant to walk even short distances and much rather use their private car which takes them straight from the starting point to their destination without walking to bus stop and/or changing modes =

Main challenges to Delhi urban bus transportation Little or no integration of different modes of public transport. Lack of aligned circulation plan for passengers changing modes, need for multiple tickets when changing modes Insufficient government effort to tackle private vehicle parking issues in Delhi. People regularly park cars illegally in public spaces and violations are often not prosecuted as many rules are systematically not being enforced. Illegal parking is not only obstructing the way of many buses and keeps them from operating on time and serving bus stops as desired, it also allows private car owners to use their vehicles in an unsustainable manner without paying the price Bus operations are not carried out according to guide lines. Sometimes Bus drivers are not stopping at the designated stops, deviating from routes and over speed

The 3P Plan Improve: Convenience Reliability Popularity

The Good News! – Starting point Modern Busses Upgraded Bus Stands Busses are equipped with GPS and CCTV* App exists for Bus Information** The Infrastructure Exists! At least to an extent. *CCTV under implementation **App Name: Next Bus Delhi & PoochO

Solutions to Problems through Big Data and Technology Convenience Improve Bus stop locations and Bus Stop infrastructure Rerouting of Bus routes using big data Ticket integration – Having a single card for all means of transport – Will be able to track movement of people like we can in the Metro Easy access to route and timetable information – Provide detailed maps at bus stops Improve the App UI

Solutions to Problems through Big Data and Technology Reliability Provide Real Time Data regarding Estimated Time of Arrival at the Bus Stop as well as on the App – Nothing makes it more reliable and also help to gain users trust Provide tracking of Buses on the App Use of static data of GPS on Buses and use of Big Data to judge from information regarding traffic conditions the correct estimated arrival times

Solutions to Problems through Big Data and Technology Popularity It needs to be advertised that buses are the closest means of public transport that provide almost door to door transport There need to be better advt. campaigns through radio, print and hoardings regarding the pros of Bus usage Make Bus stops centres for information regarding the neighbouring areas – Maps Get endorsements from influential politicians and actors Standard Modern Bus Stands

Other Key Ways to Promote the use of Bus and Public Transport Example of Nudging at Metro Stations Announcements inside Buses SAFETY! MINDSET! Changing Attitudes Example: Make School bus or cycle for children staying nearby, compulsory for all students and graduates
