The Rule of Three Generally 3 characters –Goldilocks and the 3 Bears –The 3 Little Pigs –The 3 Billy Goats Gruff Often times there are 3 wishes Often 3 tasks that a prince of princess must perform to find true love Sayings repeated 3 times –I’ll huff and I’ll puff and I’ll blow your house down
Magical or Animal Helpers Examples of animals –Elderly person –Talking Frog –Fairy Godmother –A Swan, ants, birds, owls, etc… Sometimes not always helping magical –Witches, fairies, mermaids, unicorns, trolls, gnomes, dragons
Magical Gifts A special mirror that allows you to see your hearts or desires Table that sets itself Goose laying golden eggs Magical pouches
Trials that Test Going to seek out a treasure Learning the answer to a riddle Spinning straw into gold Breaking through a forest to find a sleeping princess
Good and Bad Choices Helpless people or creatures to be kind to Opportunities to tell the truth or lie, cheat or be honest; betray the innocent A related idea: One’s inside matches one’s outside (a beautiful nature manifests itself in a beautiful exterior, an attractive appearance; an ugly nature shows itself in an ugly appearance) If someone’s inside and outside are at odds, by the end of the tale the two are reconciled - “Beauty and the Beast” Notice the elemental justice of the tales
