Added Value of Urbact to Gateshead Gatesheads future economic prosperity will be heavily influenced by the development of powerful alliances between industry, academia and the public sector – the triple helix. The regions universities are key economic drivers; magnets for international talent and will be at the heart of knowledge hubs of learning, research and enterprise. We believe the knowledge economy represents a cultural shift within the economy rather than the growth of new industrial sectors. Whereas traditional industrial economies have locality issues as a central role, the knowledge economy is driven by knowledge and skills development, innovation and creativity and entrepreneurship. A Local Support Group, comprising key stakeholders, has supported the Council through the project and has become an important economic partnership of the Gateshead Strategic Partnership with a valuable range of experiences that will support the development of knowledge driven businesses.

Added Value of Urbact to Gateshead Gateshead has developed the Local Action Plan to drive towards the objectives of the RUnUP project, and in doing so will build on the significant progress to date and aim to overcome the issues highlighted in the baseline study, such as; The lack of a university within Gateshead. Undeveloped partnership working between Gateshead Council and the universities. To develop the Local Action Plan, ULSG members have participated in a number of exchange and learning activities including study visits to; Tampere, Finland – Learning best practice from Tampere, the third largest city in Finland and a centre for IT-based innovation. Enschede, Holland – Focusing on the University of Twente where The cooperation between the private sector, the university and the government is unique. Coventry, UK – Exploring how the city of Coventry works in collaboration with the university

Added Value of Urbact to Gateshead Opportunities To strengthen and extend the partnership between Gateshead Council and other stakeholders, including Universities through the URBACT Local Support Group To extend existing actions and establish new actions within the context of the URBACT Local action plan To lead a high-profile European Urban network with representation at URBACT annual conferences and events and to link with new European City Partners To participate in study visits, thematic events and ULSG exchange activities learning from and exchanging practice. Challenges The joint delivery of local action and mobilisation of key actors alongside the project management of the overall RUnUP network.
