Segmented Variable Pitch Wind Turbine Nelson Mandela Metropolitan University Energy Postgraduate Conference 2013
Introduction Urban small scale turbines operate in gusty conditions. Warwick Wind Trials ∙26 small scale turbines ∙ hours logged ∙Capacity factor of 0.85% (4.15%) Turbines need to be designed for gusty conditions. Developing a new concept wind turbine designed to operate more effectively in gusty wind conditions.

Research Significance Lower cost per energy yield due to possible; Higher power yield in gusty conditions. Absolute pitch control – absolute control. Variable Tip Speed Ratio (TSR) which has the following benefits: High starting torque. Low cut-in wind speed. Constant turbine speed for various wind speeds. Same turbine can be used for high or low shaft speeds.
Challenges Reduce drag on design Strength of structure Control of segments Balanced weight
Future development Wind tunnel testing on aerofoil profiles and segment designs (Cl/Cd). Wind tunnel testing for turbulent conditions. Continue reviewing and testing scaled concepts. Design and build full scale ( Ø 3m) turbine with segment control for proof of concept.
