 Survey of daily travel by all modes of transportation.  Conducted periodically to assess the mobility of the American public  Gather data of trips, modes, duration, distance, and purpose,  Links the information to demographic, geographic, and economic data for analysis 3

 Assists transportation planners and policy makers who need comprehensive data on travel and transportation patterns  Data is collected for 24-hour period  2015, 2009, 2001-NHTS  1995, 1990, 1983, 1977, 1969-Nationwide Personal Transportation Surveys (NPTS) 4

 Quantify travel behavior at individual and household level  Analyze changes in travel characteristics over time such as trip chaining, modes, amount and purpose of travel time of day and day of week, vehicle occupancy  Demographics and travel relationship  The public’s perception of the transportation system 5

 Household members relationship, education level, income, housing type  Each household vehicle, including year, make, model, and annual miles traveled  Driver’s travel information including work  Household and workplace geographic info  Telecommuting and internet usage  Number of transit, walk, and bike trips in 24 hours period 6

 26,000 households will be allocated among 50 states and DC area, in particular the counties within a state, according to the proportion of the national population  Counties containing Metropolitan Statistical Areas (MSAs)  Counties MSAs>1 M people & Heavy rail  Counties MSAs>1 M people & no heavy rail  Counties MSAs<1M people  Counties containing no MSAs 9

 If a state is allocated less than 250 households, the state sample size will be increased to 250 households  Once a minimum of 250 households is assigned to each state, the remaining households will be allocated among the larger states in proportion with the state populations 10

 423 households would be allocated to the state of Wisconsin, based on the number of households in the state compared to all households in the nation 11

 States and MPOs have the unique opportunity to purchase samples  These additional samples, along with random national samples collected in the add-on area. Trips of ALL lengths, for ALL purposes, and for ALL modes are collected.  6 questions in

 DOTs: Arizona, California, Georgia, Maryland, New York, North Carolina, South Carolina, Texas, Wisconsin  MPOs: Des Moines (IA), Indian Nations (OK), Iowa Northland (IA), North Central Texas COG, 13

 Deliverables: Edited, weighted data, O-D geocodes for all trip purposes and modes, Odometer readings, transit, walk, bike trips, documentation and user’s guide, web-based retrieval system  Benefits: On demand, consistent local and national data, no contracting or oversight hassles, centrally coordinated, high data quality/low risk, economies of scale 14

 Used it to adjust home based shopping and non home based trip rates for the development of travel demand model  the data has been passed on to 8-10 different agencies including FHWA, Oak Ridge National Lab, who have used it for a variety of applications 16

 11,000 households will be distributed among the eight “travel demand model areas” plus the rest of the state  Households are sampled from counties with probability proportional to county size  6/7 of the add on sample will be collected on weekdays, with the remaining 1/7 collected on weekend days  Advertisement will be done 17
