Health & Safety

Why is health and safety important?

Keeping you Healthy and Safe (ish) You can never be fully “safe” But you can take reasonable precautions: New scrummaging rules

But why all the paperwork?? It’s just common sense isn’t it? Girl injured at basketball practice settles lawsuit against sports facility for $1,500,000

Responsibilities Trustee Board CEO Student Activities Manager Committee Members Members

Student Activities Policy CSU and individual Sports and Societies have a common law ‘duty of care’ to participants. If this is not implemented then the Students’ Union or Captain/Presidents can be regarded in law as negligent and subsequent legal action can be taken. This policy acts to ensure that this does not occur. This policy is guided and bound by:- Health and Safety at Work Act 1974, Management of Health and Safety at Work regulations 1999 Safety in Sport regulations. The policy can be found on CSU website (www.chestersu.com)

Code of Conduct Passing some responsibility to members Each sport and society must submit a code of practice annually We have done most of the work for you, just need to download from www.chestersu.com and fill in the red blanks. This document will contain both a generic Constitution and Code of Conduct. External Providers Coaches Instructors Speakers Before any individuals can coach your Club or Society, they will need to be registered with the Students' Union All groups with a high risk of injury through physical contact or activity will need a coach with specialist skills/knowledge to run their training sessions where the risks may occur. The coach is the leader of the training sessions but not the leader of the sport/society this is the responsibility of the club committee as student led organisation. If your coach/instructor does not attend training please contact the SU. Coaches Instructors Speakers

Safeguarding CSU has a duty of care to take all reasonable measures to safeguard the safety and welfare of all children and vulnerable adults that participate in membership activities. Student groups may encounter children and vulnerable adults through your outreach work and, on occasion, in the make-up of the student body. Under 18s and Under 21s If you need any further information please contact Student Activities Staff

Data Protection The member data should not be given out to external providers unless agreed by CSU.

Equal Opportunities Chester Students’ Union is committed to equality of opportunity for all. Chester Students’ Union recognises it has the power to reduce the disadvantages experienced by people by making its services responsive to the different needs of individuals and groups. If you ever feel that you or a member of your club has experienced discrimination at any level please inform a member of the students’ union team. As a member of the committee you have responsibility to your club and members to ensure that discrimination does not occur and everyone feels welcome.

Spot Checks Chester SU are going to evaluate your sessions. Surprise! We will evaluate you on all the above from first aiders, coaches, turning up early to complete health and safety checklist. Feedback

Disciplinary All sports and societies and their members must adhere to Student Activities Policy. Failure to do so will result in disciplinary action. Student Activities Manager deals with disciplinary action. It is recognised that teams within clubs run separately, and therefore are individually treated for disciplinary procedures.   The punishments are severe to act as a deterrent, and CSU are trying to enable student activities to take place in as safe an environment as possible. Sports and Societies have the right to appeal by stating their reasoning in a letter addressed to the President.

Disciplinary Example OFFENCE: Failure to submit a health and safety checklist within 24 hrs of the activity taking place. RESULT: Team/Society receives an official written warning. IF AN ADDITIONAL OFFENCE REPEATED WITHIN SAME ACADEMIC YEAR: Automatic one month suspension.

Ask? If you have any questions or queries please ask a member of Student Activities Team.
