Dwight D. Eisenhower Dwight David "Ike" Eisenhower was the thirty-fourth President of the U.S. from 1953 until 1961 and a five-star general in the US Army. During the Second World War, he served as Supreme Commander of the Allied forces in Europe, with responsibility for planning and supervising the successful invasion of France and Germany.

Harry Truman Harry Truman took over for President Roosevelt on April 12, He inherited quite a mess. He was engaged in the deadliest war to date and had to make a moral decision on whether or not to use the atomic bomb.

Harry Truman Harry Truman decided that the best way to end the war and save American lives was to use the atomic bomb. On the morning of August 6, 1945, at 8:15, the B-29 bomber Enola Gay dropped an atomic bomb, Little Boy, on Hiroshima. Two days later, having heard nothing from the Japanese government, the U.S. military proceeded with its plans to drop a second atomic bomb. On August 9, Nagasaki was also devastated with a bomb, Fat Man, dropped by the B-29 bomber Bockscar. The bombs killed as many as 140,000 people in Hiroshima and 80,000 in Nagasaki by the end of 1945
