The Danish Industrial PhD The purpose is to educate scientists with insight into the commercial aspects of R&D, increase R&D and innovative capacity in private companies, and to build networks between universities and private companies It is an industrial research project The student is employed by a company, and timeshares 50/50 between the university and the company. Purpose and Target Group The purpose of the Industrial PhD Fellowship programme is: - to educate researchers to acquire an insight into the industrial aspects of research and development, -to promote development opportunities for Danish industries, - to build up a network for exchange of knowledge between enterprises and Danish/foreign research institutes. Structure Primarily research work under supervision An Industrial PhD project is a unique, enterprise- oriented PhD project. The project is implemented as an actual research project carried out in collaboration between a private enterprise, an Industrial PhD fellow and a university. The Industrial PhD fellow is employed by the private enterprise Tempus SM_SCM-M012B (MA) - "Re-Form – University of Coimbra, April 2008

Structure (2) Fellows are supervised by at least two supervisors: one from the university and one from the enterprise Fellows are employed with a salary paid by the enterprise for the duration of the Industrial PhD studies, and normally divide their time equally between the department of the enterprise with which the Industrial PhD fellow is associated must be located geographically within Denmark he university and the enterprise. Structure (3) There are no nationality requirements either for the university, which may be Danish or foreign, or for the fellow. If the PhD programme is completed at a foreign university, a supervisor from a Danish university or sector research institute must be affiliated with the project. A requirement is that all communication, including the Industrial PhD Fellowship Programme application and the final Industrial PhD project and business report are prepared in Danish or English. Criteria The programme is marketed with the intention of the Industrial PhD Fellowship Programme being applied within all academic disciplines and industries. At least 40% of the enterprises that host an Industrial PhD fellow should be SMEs. The host enterprise must be a private enterprise, but may also be a private non-profit institution, private funds or private organisations with a significant element of income-generating operations. Financing Industrial PhD Fellowship projects that are awarded a grant will receive co-financing for up to three years in accordance with the following guidelines. 1) The Danish host university receives DKK 300,000 for experiment-based courses and DKK 210,000 for non experiment based courses. The grant covers: Supervision and dialogue with the workplace, the work facilities at the host university, participation on relevant PhD courses at the university. Financing (2) 2) The enterprise may receive a salary supplement of up to 50% of the national negotiated PhD salary. The enterprise may receive reimbursement for the following activities: A contribution for at conferences and industrial courses of up to DKK 75,000 for the entire period. The grant covers any required travel and accommodation arrangements such conferences or courses. Co-financing with other public funding sources is not permitted. Financing (3) 3) For projects approved after 1 September 2004, Danish or foreign universities and public centres of excellence can join as a third party and be reimbursed for assistance with up to a total of DKK 45,000 for all three years, equivalent to hours supervision. The reimbursement will be paid to the centre of excellence that is responsible for ensuring that the supervision takes place as agreed. 4) An Industrial PhD Fellowship course can be financed exclusively by private funds, but must otherwise meet the requirements for approval. Transferable/Generic Skills The programme includes a dedicated Business Course, which covers project management, organisation, inter-disciplinary collaboration, dissemination, patenting and commercialisation. During the course, a business report is prepared which documents the fellows understanding of the project as seen from the enterprise s commercial perspective. Evaluation The PhD Evaluation Board is appointed by the university. At least one member of the PhD Evaluation Committee must have enterprise-relevant research experience within the area of specialisation, either through employment in the private sector or through documented collaboration projects with private enterprises.
