Part 1 procedure Obtain a 3 cm and a 2 cm agar block from your teacher. Submerge all three cubes in NaOH solution. Use caution with sodium hydroxide - it is caustic. It will burn your skin or clothes. WEAR GOGGLES AT ALL TIMES!!!! Allow the cubes to soak for 10-15 minutes.

Agar Lab part 2 After 10-15 minutes, pour the NaOH down the sink and rinse the cubes with water. Do not pour the agar cubes out of the beaker. WEAR GLOVES AND GOGGLES UNTIL YOU’RE DONE WITH STEP 6 Remove the agar cubes from the beaker with a spoon, and blot them dry with a paper towel. With a knife, cut the agar cubes in half and measure the depth of the colored area in cm. Clean up: Diamond = return goggles, Spade = fold and put away aprons, Heart = clean counter/throw away paper towels, Club = make sure supplies are left for next period like you found them
Analysis questions: page 14 of your journal What do you notice about the agar cubes as they increase in size? What happens to the cell’s ability to feed itself and get rid of wastes as it grows? If the sodium hydroxide were some vital substance, such as food, and the agar cubes were cells, which cell would be fed the most efficiently? Explain why cells are so small.
