Key Vocabulary Appalachian Mountains Fall Line Piedmont Clan

Back….to the Country  Dense Forests and Rushing Streams brought Settlers to the Backcountry of the Appalachian Mountains  In the South the Backcountry began at the Fall Line and extended to the Piedmont of the Appalachian Mountains  Small Farms near water used the forests for wood for heat and their homes

The Buck-skin stops here  Early Settlers traded with Native Americans using Buckskins as currency leading to Farmers settling in the region  Settlers build log cabins for shelter which could often be small and dirty  While small farmers moved to the region at first, Scots-Irish settlers moved to the Backcountry

YES WE CLAN  After England and Scotland became Great Britain, poverty and famine drove the Scots- Irish to America  Clans settled in the Backcountry and helped settlers survive  Clans would band together to overcome dangers and problems of the Backcountry

Living off the Land  As trade was difficult, backcountry farmers became self-sufficient  Hunting, Fishing, farming, and the help of family helped the Settlers survive in the Backcountry  Women became important to Backcountry life helping their families survive  Native Americans would soon begin to clash with Backcountry settlers

Fights in the Forests  As settlers looked for land, they moved west leading to conflicts with Native Americans, the French, and the Spanish Settlers  Horses, brought by the Spanish, contributed to the lives of Settlers and Native Americans  Settlers and Native Americans began bloody fights to control land in the Backcountry

Melting Pot  As French settled Canada and moved south, the English settlers began to clash as they moved west into French Territories  The Spanish Settled the South and Southwest including California, Arizona, Florida, Utah, Colorado, Wyoming, New Mexico and Nevada  As Missionaries tried to Convert Native Americans, England formed an American Identity as they defended themselves against all different Groups
