Bell Ringer! Which nation do you think is most likely to fight with Britain over territory in North America? Why?

Rivals in North America  French and British settlers compete for land and resources  Ohio River Valley – French build forts to protect claims

Native Americans choose sides  Many tribes lived in the regions the Europeans were settling  Tribes competed for land and resources IROQUOIS HURON ALGONQUINS

 Trading led to alliances (or partnerships) between Native Americans and Europeans  When the British and French go to war, their Native American allies do the same

Washington Attacks!  British fur traders begin moving west into Ohio River Valley  Washington goes west to confront the French  He is sent back again to build a fort but the French beat him to it building Fort Duquesne (DOO-CANE)

Washington Attacks!  Washington and his men surprise the French and attack the fort  Washington builds a makeshift fort – Fort Necessity  The French counterattack, surround the fort and capture Washington – he is later released
