How did exploration of the Americas lead to settlement? Two fans (James and Sarah) are watching a football game. James cheers for the Pittsburgh Steelers. Sarah is a fan of the Green Bay Packers. James’ team wins, but Sarah’s team loses! What might each fan say about the game?

First come, first served What does the saying, “first come, first served” means? Ex. Getting to the lockers first. Which slot is yours? Describe a situation in which you experienced this. Were you the one who was helped or hurt? How did your experience make you feel? How do you think others felt about the experience?

Between the 1400s and the 1600s, many Europeans believed that they could claim land in the Americas by being the first to send explorers into an area. How would you feel if you got to the locker first then someone else came and threw your belongings out and took over the locker? When explorers claimed this land, they cared little about the American Indians who already lived there. How do you think each side felt or viewed the situation? What dangers did they face? In this chapter, you will find out about some of the first European explorers in the “New World.”

Chapter 5 - Closing What did you learn about European explorers that you did not know before? What ways were the eight explorers similar? Different? Which of the explorers do you think had the greatest impact on history? Why? Are there ways in which the actions of these explorers continue to affect our lives today? Explain.

Chapter 6 – Early English Settlements

What challenges faced the English colonies? We will read about the three English colonies. Be ready to discuss these questions. Why did people move to that colony? What hardships did these settlers face? How did the American Indians treat these first settlers? Did the settlement flourish or fail? Why or why not? What mistakes did you make in the beginning that made survival even more difficult? What do you think happened to the people of Roanoke? Why do you think it was important to sign the Mayflower Compact? How did they improve their lives’ after arriving?

Why do you think this settlement was successful?

Plymouth Why did settlers come to Plymouth? Why do you think it was important to sign the Mayflower Compact? What hardships did these settlers face? What mistakes did they make in the beginning that made survival even more difficult? How did the American Indians in the area treat these first settlers? How was their life improve since they first arrived? Why do you think your settlement was successful?
